No Muffler Simulation

I fondly remember my youth where I used clothes pins to attach cardboard to my rear wheel where when it flapped against the spokes, it simulated a motorcycle. Then
I grew up and bought one, but it was much quieter. The following link provides interesting information. Caution, if you like fermented Swedish canned fish or the ringing in your head is interfering, this educational clip is not for you. :) Ha!

ive always held in my personal opinion, that loud exhausts saving lives are a little overstated. i think that you really dont notice a bike via sound until it goes past you. i mean sure in standstill traffic with my windows down ill hear a bike coming up between lanes. but when im driving on road i never really tend to hear the bike until its actually just gone by. i think a mix of road noise, wind noise, (music if im listening) and the fact the exhaust note is projected backwards while the vehicles travel forwards all factor together in such a way it makes it dofficult to notice until its right in your face

Exactly, that's what this video is saying and showing. The loudest bike I ever heard was like the blast of a jetfighter engine, it rattled me and just about caused me to steer off the road, but not until it was right, I mean RIGHT BESIDE me. No early warning whatsoever. I almost jumped out of my seat when it passed, but I never noticed it coming up (except by sight in my mirror), or heard it until after it was at least 2 car lengths ahead of me. So there is absolutely no early warning by noise, and well-intentioned riders trying to protect themselves are just making themselves older by losing their hearing early and losing the fillings in their teeth.?
