Auto headlights are uh...well ok but it's makes the brain dead unseeable targets in the daytime when it's foggy or raining heavy....Auto does NOT turn on the tail lights in this case

If automakers wanted to be assist the stupid they'd ALL set their lighting systems so turn on when the windshield wipers come on.

A lot of cars do exactly that.

A lot of US states also have signs along the road that say "If your wipers are on, all your lights should be too" more or less. We could certainly use a bunch of those distributed along the sides of the 401.

Yes, auto headlights turn on both the headlights and tail lights. When you see a car with no tail lights, that's the driver running on just the DRL's. In other words, they forgot to turn the lights on. Some DRL's are pretty bright, which doesn't help.

Yes you are 100% correct, what i meant to say was that during the daytime when visibility is poor ( fog and rain ) the auto head lights do not come on, hence no tail lights. Most drivers don't know that and it creates visibility issues for the driver following. I apologize for the miss conception

Yeah. Most newer cars have a sensitivity adjustment to the auto headlights for getting them to turn on earlier or later to dusk. But at least on mine it still isn't enough for some rainy/foggy conditions.

In my experience it is usually dark enough in fog or rain to turn on the headlights they are also linked to the wipers normally.

Depends on the age and make of the car.
Auto on my 2015 Odyssey is DRL during the day, which unfortunately includes fog, snow, rain and other inclement weather, unless it gets sufficiently dark. Because of that I manually switch to low beams when I enter the car. My kids however, don’t always, even though I remind them. I don’t see any adjustment for ambient light.
The old Subaru, was decades ahead of its time for that.

Fun fact-- apparently, the headlights on Cyber Truck are useless when it snows. The snow seems to stack on the bumper and block the lights completely. The light strip that you see is basically a daylight running light.
