So i am starting a thread for Ninja 650R's

I have just put 1000 km on my new to me 2009 650r and am noticing :

1. the gear changes from neutral to 1st and from 1st to 2nd are much louder then any other bike i have owned.. Its a big "clunk" sound

2. The right side of the bike heats up a lot... I am currently running with no lower fairing so i am sure that adds to it.

Has anyone else experienced these with their ninja.

i have a 10 650r, that sounds just like mine too lol. its not only the sound when u put it into first, it also jerks a bit to.

Normal.

I have ridden mine from here to BC and back, check out my thread in the touring forum.

Also my bike is for sale, buy it.

Yes, the clunk is loud, but I never accidentally hit N in between. I think it's a great shift. The heat is off the exhaust headers.

Well i put yoshi exhaust on mine so i dont hear the clunk :-)

And getting used to heat!!

Wow to bc and back!!!
How long was that ride?

Matt you are best suited to answer this..

I noticed your er6n had a fender eliminator.. Did your back or seat get wet in rainy conditions as a result of removing the rear fender?

Yes I have a rear seat cowl as well, it gets that thing dirty as hell w/ fender eliminator. I was thinking a rear hugger might solve it.

Hey guys, I guess I looked into this thread at a great time! Do you guys recommend this bike as an upgrade from a 250? After my last long ride I'm really itching to move up to something, will be posting my bike up soon to check out interest. I've only sat at it at shows, so need to find a Kawi dealer (near Etobicoke) that I can actually try and ride. Just looking for a bit more power than my bike and I love the look of the ER6-N more so than the 650R. Also, how is it for passenger comfort? Handles highway ok? Everything I've read online is positive about the bike.

When I was in northern Thailand, I rented a CBR250 for a day and took an ER6 for a 700km, 4 day trip through the mountains (totally recommend this trip, best motorcycling of my life).

The ER6 felt ridiculously good after the CBR250 (my ride at home was an EX500 at the time). The power, smoothness and down low torque compared to the 250 is night and day. The riding position is great, very comfy, high handle bars and a big one piece seat.

When I got back from Thailand and took my EX500 for a spin, I was totally disappointed. Picked up an SS hoping to fix the bug. Although I find it scary fast, theres a certain charm the ER6 had that I don't feel on my SS. Maybe it's the higher, wide handle bars and more confidence inspiring seating position...but sometimes I still wonder if I shoulda got one instead of my SS.

The one I rented had a sweet luggage rack attached at the back (could have gone 2up + room to tie down a backpack). Didn't do much highway riding so I can't comment there.

The kicker, this bike had 72,000kms on it, all renter miles and probably abused. Never let me down, started everytime and the ABS even saved my *** once or twice when coming in too hot.

Sal, how did you find the ER6-N with wind protection? I don't have a lot of it on the 250 but I just love the look of that naked bike. Also, I can't seem to find what years / models have the ABS?

I think it only came out with ABS here starting in either 2012 or 2013. Or that might be the 650R only. Both are available in all model years with ABS internationally but North Americans hate ABS for whatever reason so most manufacturers have only recently started releasing bikes with it.

Didn't really get any highway time on the bike, it was all lower speed twisties. Guessing it would suck wind protection wise compared to a 650R though. Bike capable of some longer distance runs vs. cool city bike with streetfighter looks. Depends on your intended usage.

OK thanks. The 500x is the one at the top of my list but it's about 8k OTD from a Honda dealer and there's none used anyway right now. The 650R/ER6-N has been on my radar the longest as a possible replacement. Other 600+ bikes are unfortunately too high for me. Thanks for the quick response. Overall I assume that people are happy with their 650/ER6?

I recently moved up from the 250r to the 650r. It was a good move. But be prepared for the additional weight of the bike. The 250r was alot easier to handle.

i got a 650r and damn i love it! ive ridden a few different SS bikes and the seating position on the 650r is soooo comfortable. one thing i have noticed is that people who have rode my bike that are used to the more sporty aggressive position find it really hard to maneuver this bike because its a different body motion. i personally think its a lot more confidence inspiring then the SS bikes. i ride on the highway a lot and wind isn't usually an issue since the bike weighs more than a 250 so i don't get blown around at all. power wise its plenty enough to get you to pass people on the highway with ease. it easily gets to 175km which you will never realistically have to go (not saying Ive gone that fast... :P).

Overall its a great starter bike or a good bike to transition you into a SS one day (or even to keep it).
