NHL suspensions

So you hate religion, but will read the bible. seems a little Hippocrate to me. Guess you don't hate it that much. Seems you have a lot in common with religion. I hate lots of things, and won't read, watch or do any of them. I agree that the penalty should be harsher for deliberate head shots, but 95% are not deliberate.

Yup. Don't twist it to your liking though.
I did read the bible - NOT "will" read the bible.
Did you mean "hypocrite"? (I won't bust your balls for brutal spelling, because I'm not the best either - don't worry). Respond if you wish, if and when you know the meaning of the word, 'hypocrite'.
Have you ever had to wait at the dentist, Dr, or elsewhere?
See any rags to read on the table?
Ever read one you'd never buy, or read outside of that waiting room?
I have.
Most have, I'm sure.
Does that make us hypocrites?

95% NOT deliberate? ummm......I like your use of 95%, but it's the other way around. (IMO)
In order to make a dent in purposely (95%) laid head shots, they should schedule a few games a year where players are NOT allowed to wear helmets. You'd see respect brought back to the game, the way it used to be, Gordie Howe being exempt of course ;-)

Here is what happened to the nhl
1. In the early 90's a need to globalize the game was voted
2. When they brought the europeans here they found out that most could not play the physical north american game.
3. Instead of waiting for the europeans to adapt to our game which would take longer we (out of greed for money) began to adapt our game to them
4. Since then the equipment size grew to protect the soft players and actually ended up causing more injuries.
5. Nhl wont enforce an equipment cut back cuz billions would be lost
6. so we constantly add rules and make changes to accomodate the new generation of soft players traveling twice the speed with twice the equipment

Exactly,

Kind of like on schools where they sent a letter home asking my Kindergarten daughter not to wear a shirt that said "Merry Christmas" on it, as well as they were told they can't wear Halloween costumes to school because we have to accomadate the forieners religion and they don't agree with that.
Too bad, My daughter is going to school in her costume and I don't care what they say.

How did you get to "hate a lot of things" without reading or watching them? Are you saying you hate things based upon some Neanderthal way of thinking? Seems you hate things you know nothing about, and have no interest in actually taking in any information to make that decision. Pretty short sighted.

I was going to ask this on yahoo, but figured there must be fellow riders out there who follow ice hockey obviously =)

I will be attending some of the OHL and OJHL games for work. I am planning on travelling as far as Cobourg/Peterborough in the east and Guelph in the West and Niagara down south and so on, and whatever is in GTA of course.

The problem with my work is that I have to attend to the games that I claim so. There is no cancellation or being late. I would like to know how long an average ice hockey game is in OHL and OJHL. And how long is the longest game practically (and what is it in theory) ?

From that info, I will see possibilities of attending 2-3 games a day on the weekends. For example, there are 4games next week at 1 venue (Cobourg) starting at 10:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00. Possible to make it to each without much risk ?

Average OHL game is the same length as an NHL game. 3 x 20 minute periods, 20 minutes between periods.
Considering stoppages, breaks etc, you'll be looking at an absolute minimum of 2 hours, 15 minutes per game.

As for all the other religion crap in the thread, it's about hockey.

Back to the equipment causing injuries etc.. yes, it has the possibility to do so. If any of you have ventured into a sporting goods shop recently, you will see that the body armour with exposed plastic (besides shin pads) is very very very hard to find.. maybe in the used section. Manufacturers have started making equipment much less rigid than before.

Now, regarding head contact, players etc.

I'm a Hockey Canada certified referee. I do games all the way up through Midget AAA, and have played Junior hockey many years ago. I understand the game completely, and have seen how it is changing from year to year.

Please, take a look at a game on TV anywhere from the 70's through to the late 90's. There's a hit maybe once every 3 minutes, the players are significantly smaller, and the play is no where near as fast as it is today. Today's game has 3 hits per minute.

Go to a local hockey rink before any Bantam AAA (14 year olds) through to Midget AAA (16 year olds) and have a look at the size of the kids. Many are 6' tall, and are built like amateur body builders. They hit the gym an hour a day, and are on the ice at least 4-5 times a week minimum.

Cant tell you how many thousands of minutes of penalties for head checks were assessed in minor hockey last year. Habits kids get into in the minors continue on into later levels of hockey - especially when they see their heroes in the NHL not getting into trouble for questionable hits.

They've upped the ante this year - any contact to the head whatsoever is automatically a 2 minute minor, regardless of how light or grazing it is. Any direct contact to the head is a double minor.

People hate it, people love it. It's all about respect - which is sadly lacking. Refereed a game last night, and called 3 head contact penalties - two minors and one double minor. The double was lined up as a clean hit, but the hitter didn't judge his target's speed acurately and hit the player in the head, and nowhere else... .was amazed he bounced right back up again.

Shanahan is doing an EXCELLENT job in handing out suspensions. The onus is on the hitter to deliver a safe hit. Just because you can deliver a near blind side head hit that will smoke a player into next week doesn't mean you have to.

To anyone who disagrees with this, all I can say is that I hope you are in attendance at a game where a player gets hit in the head and is injured. It's horrifying to see. Some people may laugh when a player who gets hit in such a manner tries to get up and falls over several times, but chances are, they've received a serious concussion.

Maybe you can volunteer to put on some gear and get hit in the same fashion... then see if you want the rules changed or not.

If the NFL can put a No Head Check rule into effect, the NHL should be able to as well.
