New Yamaha MT-09 triple engine

9K is not bad at all .... now KTM Duke 690 for 10K just looks silly, and Triumph STR just might loose some market.

It seems that they threw all kinds of new tech into the engine with an easy maintenance schedule in mind. The only obvious thing they left out is ABS, which really is a head scratcher for brand new bike released at the end of 2013 year .... at times when ABS will become mandatory soon pretty much everywhere where it matters.

9k? Smart. Unless American dealers discount heavily, I don't think Yamaha Canada will lose much to cross-border shopping (though individual shops could change that). Get the product launched under the magic number with all the cool bits on display. Generate buzz, steal some market share and THEN add an ABS option which pushes the cost closer to 10k. If it walks the walk, then people won't be so shy about the cost at that stage. 10k before anyone touches it and you would immediately get (unfavorably) compared to existing premium brands.

I'd rather have the ABS than radial brakes though, even if they look the part.

Why do they go out of their way to uglify them all the time here?

Looks great and its a triple! I'd like to see a 600cc version for insurance and I'm questioning the ceramic piston bores. How do you fix those if you have an issue in there? Looks like a fun ride though!

Most newer bike engines use coated aluminum bores, it's nothing new. Yamaha has been doing it since the YZF600. The idea is that it is so hard that the wear rate is near zero. They can be re-coated.

Lovely seating position - would have preferred slightly smaller cc - 600 or 750 but hell who can argue with the weight.
Thats a very nice ride if you can keep the front end down with that upright seating. :D
That' sports engine tho - don't see it as a Vstrom style ride but kudos on the bike

Many Europeans just disagreed with you, because they believe we got the better color choices. Have you seen the red one vs. the euro blunt orange??

Glad that they made a good decision for once. I am not sure what the guy who designed the large blinkers on the NA version was thinking ..... but, oh well.

I don't think they made it to be a Vstrom contender .... the fact that people will be comparing it to one is another matter.

OK, let's do the math. 4 valves per cylinder x 3 cylinders = 16....... Wait!! What?! Dafriggin 'ell!? How could this be!!!!!! Engine sound is intoxicating. Don't suck muffler when riding.

You get 4 spare valves .. it's all over the news in Europe. New Yamaha approach ...

My point was that the engine could be the platform for several bikes from Yamaha including a junior Tenere like the Tiger 800, Vstrom or BMW GS 700/ 800. Look at how many models BMW have in their F series.

Helps spread the development costs. A little bit of MBQ thinking.

The Eurozoners get FOUR colour schemes, including the best of the bunch--Matt Grey. It's definitely muted but fits the design nicely without being boring. Grey wheels to match the frame would be almost perfect.

The bike was introduced to some US dealers at the MGM Grand in Vegas yesterday. They were allowed to look at it, but they weren't allowed to touch it. Another Yamaha quirk. I was chatting with a bike shop owner / dealer at the airport. On another note, Suzuki has plans for a new 250 that's will be based on the B-King's styling. Stay tuned.

And look at how some of the BMW 2 cyl parallel twin offerings are simply blunt, not very exciting for the most part .... You cannot even compare F800R (base price 10K) to this bike, the Yami will eat it for breakfast and .

I am sure Yamaha will use the platform extensively, I just hope they will not go the BMW way about it one size fits all.

hmmm saw lots of Burgman 125s and 250s in Europe.

they all seem similar to the 650

The 650 has been re-designed somewhat for 2013 so maybe that's the story.

I'd demo that triple for sure....sign me up. Last time I rode a triple was decades ago on a 750 two stroke that had me hanging on for dear life.....damn that thing was fast.

Maybe they were just prototypes for display and not true production models? Suzi's baby B-King is the Inazuma 250. HFL did a mini review a while back. A slightly heavier, less powerful gs500 from what I remember (though it has FI).

Anyhow, the FZ/MT looks like a solid effort. Still have my unused budget after the CB1100 sticker shock, so if the ergos are for real (and has suspension designed for adults), I'd sign on the dotted line.

The engine sounds awesome.
similar weight, HP, and torque to my KTM...Japanese reliability and ease of maintainance. Upright riding position, while still employing sportbike wheels, tires, brakes and suspension......and a mile lower seat height than my KTM. Hmmmm. Just needs some windscreen.

Very tempted to move from my FZ6. Just need to know two things - what kind of mileage will 847cc triple get from 14L tank and will side hard bags kit will be available from Yamaha or Givi? If you browse accessories at the moment - luggage wise only top case listed as accessory
