New wheels...

These things are available all over LA and have been for years. They're hugely popular. Mind you, they have a climate where they can be used year round.

The one I bought is the consumer version of a scooter made for the rental market.

Initial thoughts. It’s very well made. Everything looks beefy on it. No shoddy sharp pieces of metal at joins or plastic casting leftovers. Software download and link to the scooter worked well. Firmware update all good. Charged from 60-100% in an hour or so. Tipped it down with rain so haven’t checked to see if it will move my lardy ass at decent speeds or not. Did have a small issue pumping up the tires. You get a valve stem extender for the tires which have limited access for the lock on inflator heads but it’s screw on and as you release the screw after inflation the small release of air you get is actually relatively large for these 10” tires. I need a small press on inflator adapter so I can disengage the inflator quicker if any of that makes sense.

See if you can adjust or remove the core depressor in the extender.

Very cool and a possible option...but not in our climate. Maybe a few months a year depending on your commute and tolerance for cold/wet...similar to a bike but much less versatile.

We've got a guy doing rides in our neighbourhood on one of those unicycle electric things. Looks very slick and he just zooms around in the mornings and in the evenings.

Similar to this... Gotway Mten3 10” 800W Motor Electric Unicycle (EUC) - Canada Dealer

Well right now we are down to one car so I’m hoping to use this to head back and forward to the office and small errands for a bit of fun while we are shopping for one. This is also to see if the wife likes it and if she does I’ll get another and pack them in the car for road trips so we can explore cities without the hassle of parking etc when we get there. Not sure what the legality is in Quebec City but these would be great there if they can handle the hills.

800 watts and >23 mph on that thing? Aw hell no. He'll be hamburger in no time.

I'm sure I'll see him zooming by next week during a walk...when I do I'll talk to him and ask about it. He just looks so relaxed on it, very cool to watch.

Don't get me wrong, they look like a cool toy and I think it would be fun to play with away from obstacles but your stability/emergency maneuvering when something gets in front of you is quite limited. You are basically crashing into it at >23 mph and hoping for the best.

First ride! So...on eco mode, which is a reduced acceleration and speed mode, it moves me around fine at 17kmh. It takes me up modest hills. Kids came running onto the road to shout and wave and a cyclist stopped to chat. The brakes are actually pretty good. Will be doing stoppies later. I think it’s a keeper!

Middle mode (D mode) gets me up to 28kmh measured and no longer any issues with hills. After several laps of the neighbourhood I have one bar flashing out of the 5. Haven't had time to try S mode yet but I’m seriously impressed right now.

I would guess it might actually be a little scary at that top S mode speed. 32 kmh may not seem much on a motorcycle or in a car but standing on a narrow flat surface only cm's above the road, which is racing by you ?

That's where the good brakes come into play. I've gone that quickly on a stupid razor scooter and it wasn't horrendous and definitely has much more limited braking.

Kingston (y) home of big air speed bumps.

... gotta ride there in a few minutes to pick up wheel bearings.

I was in Ottawa a few weeks ago. These things were available for rent allover. It seemed like a pay/kilometer deal. Its electric and the tree huggers will let you ride them anywhere.
