New vs Used Debate

You are forgetting a few options

Used: Private Sale
Used: Dealer

I much rather save myself the hassle and buy directly from a dealer as I have OMVIC as a line of defense.

+1 for SweetOnions debate.

But 600ss are awesome. A bit scary too tho.
If I was smarter last year wen I bought my bike, I would have seriously got a Yamaha fz6r. But I wasnt.. and got a R6. Still love it I picked it up used.
There are many reason's why I would have chose an fz6r over an R6, but at the time wen I was shopping for bikes... I just couldnt stop thinking about that R6 and ended up getting one.

This is a good video, might make your decision easier. :D

New vs used... to me this is purely a money decision.

If you've got the money, can afford to spend it, and don't plan on seeing much of it ('it' being what you spent on the bike and mods) again, buy new.

I would always buy used, or a previous-year-model bike that's been sitting at the dealer too long. Me cheap.

It is very unlikely that the cost to repair a used bike would be too costly. I purchased my r6 for cheap and spent 1,000 repairing it and was still better off than buying a new bike.

Sure, there is some peace of mind when purchasing new, but if you are price sensitive, then buy used. If you want some peace of mind, purchase it used from a dealer. Sure I could have it cheaper buying it from a private sale, however, I didnt want to waste my time dealing with people and their games.

Sometimes paying a slight premium is worth it. I did not have to worry about the following that usually comes with a private sale
1) Registering the bike
2) Sticker plate
3) Liens
4) Delivery/towing
5) Service
6) Availability

For me the value of the above is worth at least $500-1,000

This thread reminds me why the Kawasaki Ninja 300 is such a good starter bike. The bit of extra power seems to help extend the boredom/outgrow factor of the bike.

If the OP can find a deal on a left over Honda CB 500 that might be a great choice for them. At 500 cc the insurance hit with a carrier like State Farm would be favorable and at 47 hp there is "enough" power for passing on the highway and yet is a "forgivable" machine. This would be a great bike for the next 3-5 years.

Edit: There is a $500 rebate on 2013 CB 500s...

The big question is will Desjardins continue insuring by engine size only? If not, find a 650.

Lets not overlook the Burgman 650. It'll best a R1 or Goldwing in the right circumstances. Low mileage examples can be had dirt cheap because they frighten no0bies.

Bwahahahahaha! Sorry MacDoc, not knocking the ride, but that was just plain funny.

I'd tend to recommend new once the dust settles from some of the price drops like the Yamaha FZ series which you should seriously consider...especially the FZ-07 for your step up.

If you are commuting the more upright stance makes it easier and there is no lack of power or handling.
We just don't have the road near by for sport riding compared to what is 3-4 hours away.

You can finance new, the tech on the Yamaha's is superb and ground breaking given the price.

If you are a smaller rider you could consider the CBR500 - good on insurance, bullet proof build and less of a power jump.

My kid went 250 Ninja and then sport seating SV650s sort of similar thinking to yours. He did a couple of longish trips with me and enjoyed the handling but the seating position for long days was literally a pain.

He's now on the FZ8 and enjoying it far more. He had no problem with the ride to PA last fall and enjoyed it far more than the previous one on the SV
The QUebec ride which was longer brought it home that the sports seating was not for him.
These are better urban hooligans and no slouches on the twists plus a much easier commuting position.

The FZ8 was no more expensive for insurance than the SV650s - a surprise given 105 HP. But it's not classed like the SS.

If new then you want to make sure it's the right bike....he didn't but we got a good deal selling it and a very good deal on the replacement but he paid a lot for that learning experience.

I'd actually wait a bit and do some demo days before jumping.
The lower prices on the new designs will force used prices down maybe even this year.

As a shared owner of a ZZR250 I kinda know where you are coming from. However, no issue with cruising the bike even at 140. Also if you think it's slow getting there, you should compare times to any modest car - you'd be surprise how "not slow" your 250 is.

But hey, if you wants a new ride, by all means - you don't need to sell us :)

For me it's ALWAYS used. I don't need the stress of having something bright shiny and new to stress about. Better having a scratch or two and now worrying so much about someone backing up to it with a pickup.

To give you and idea, a 2000 VFR with low kms and every bit as good as a new one (technically biased of course) for $3500.00 vs brand spanking new $15000.00. The trick though is to know your bikes. There are some used 3 year old Ninja 650's out there with asking prices of only a couple grand less than brand new - room for some bargaining methinks.

I use to be big on buying private/used with saving on taxes and normally cheaper pricing . I said i would never buy new but with the prices in the gta on used bikes on kijiji I'd almost say new is the way to go these days if you dont have to finance can't get over the what people are trying for there bikes

I'm with coyo on this NEVER bought new.
30 plus years of riding and about 10 bikes later I don't see a new bike in my future. I'd rather get a used bike and spend the money I saved on another toy. I suppose buying used is one of the reasons I have a 2 bikes licensed for the road along with a bunch of other two wheeled toys and a sled.
Same with cages. Bought one new but I'd never make that mistake again

If you have basic mechanic knowledge and some common sense - buy used. Unless you're filthy rich and simply don't care. You save so much money on used bikes, it's not even close. Chances are you can sell your used motorcycle a couple of years down the road for the same price you bought it for or even make a slight profit. That's not going to happen if you buy from a dealer.

Bikes are easier to work on then cars, btw, so I wouldn't worry that much about having to spend a humongous amount of money on repairs when it's out of warranty. Just don't buy a beat up one.

As for insurance - what's the reason you are limiting yourself to SF? Most other companies will have 650cc bikes at a much lower rate than what SF offers. The only reason people go to SF is for super sports. Their car rates suck too.

Speaking of super sports - commuting is not what they were designed for. Between their aggressive and tight ergos, high fuel consumption/small tanks and high-end focused power delivery you may want to give sport-touring category a more thorough look.

False, chances are you sell and the difference between purchase price and resale is a minor difference. A 10k bike sold for 8k over two years essentially will cost you 83 dollars a month.

Just look for any decently priced 600cc bike with decent mileage used. Read what the poster has stated as to how its been maintained and what he/she has used it for. If you're having that much trouble with insurance, go for a CBR500 its quite a bit lower than any sports bike rated at 600+
