New?? U-Haul Policies

I attempted to rent a U-Haul van to move some stuff on Saturday. I reserved the van online but when I went to get it there appears to be some new policies that prevented renting it. So a heads up...

They refused to serve me unless I downloaded their app.
I said I don't have or want the app, too bad--no service without it.
Of course the app did not work on my phone (my guess it would not let me make an account or sign-in as I did not give it permission to access my location and other invasive stuff--or it just sucks??).
45 minutes wasted at this point, downloading and then screwing around with the app and a huge lined formed.
I had to prove to the clerk the app wasn't working to get any service...
They have asked for a second contact/phone number for a long time but now they need to call it and verify you with that person, WTF.

Problem for me at this point, my wife was waiting in the car without her phone, so there is no one to answer her cell or our home phone... I was not about to randomly try someone else to see if they will answer early in the morning to vouch for me. So that was that they refused to rent me a van.

It is too bad as customer service for me at the Queensway location was always top notch until now, we used to rent there very often (almost once per month). I rented one recently with zero issues. It is also too bad as they have decent weekend hours.

Luckily it did not rain and Enterprise rented me a pick-up without an invasive app or a second phone number to verify me otherwise I might have been screwed.

Other than Home Depot, anyone have any suggestions for renting cargo vans Etobicoke/Mississauga/etc.? Home Depot is likely the best option now but they are always slammed.

I am also surprised how many rental places close very early on the weekend (or are not open) and many no longer let you drop off after hours due to vehicle theft. I noted to Enterprise that the floor mats were missing, she said we take them out otherwise people steal them :{ .
A friend that worked at HD said they only rented to people buying HD goods.
Are we talking about corporations or people? Corporations need to screw off with all of these apps and need to register for accounts for everything. For some things, it makes sense (eg itunes). For most things (eg light control on local network, renting cars, etc), app/account should be entirely optional. The data/tracking is their real product. The advertised product is just the hook.
Congratulations! You have been digitized. No human contact required. Just fit your situation into our little box. Reshape your situation until it fits our little box.

Want to worry? Go to Costco and read the questions needed to qualify for their credit card. They will know more about you than your mother, all sitting in their data bank until a hacker breaks in and sells the info to the dark web.

Pouring salt on the wound, someone sells your house out from under you and you can't rent a truck to get the contents.

That was never mentioned when I rented the last two times at two different locations. Once I did also rent a ramp (bought a scooter) and the other time was a dump run. The website even mentions one of the vans as fitting a Queen size bed and they don't sell those.

That was the old policy many years ago, they also had a must be back in 90 minutes at one time. Back then we would actually just buy a 2X4 and then go move whatever we needed, in a rush, all for $20 plus the 2X4.

Now (at least most locations, I can't say all) they just rent the vans with a 90 minute low cost option and full day rentals with unlimited mileage. For me though, more times than not I line things up for the van so I am likely buying lumber anyways--among other tasks. Just HD is usually slammed so I will need to book a couple weeks in advance.

With no smart phone I was thinking the same thing. No worries I own a trailer.
@just-me let me know if you to borrow it. I'd trust anyone who owns both an RD350 and CB750
Now if I could only get a hitch for my little Accent 🤔
  • Additional Contact - Will be Called & Verified >Don't know anyone that would be willing to do that for me.
  • Employment - Will be Called & Verified > Retired Hmmm
  • Relative's Information - Will be Called & Verified > No relations left alive, good luck calling.
  • Passport (Not Expired) > Not getting a passport just to rent a truck.
  • Residential Lease Agreement (Current) Lease is not in my name.
Yup, not getting a U-Haul.
