New Router needed

I'm still not clear on what he doesn't "LIKE?"

What is he unable to do with the current equipment?

Apparently it's been dropping his connection constantly and he has to reboot the router constantly. I haven't had any issues on my netbook...my 2 pc's and other laptop are being re-imaged, so I can't tell if the network has dropped at home and when...I always have my netbook on me...I can only go by his word for now.

I'm the director of IT for a large Advertising agency and we use everything in your post above together with zero issues, and even use linksys routers for wireless in some areas.

I'm not seeing where his issue is? Does he have an explanation or is it the typical apple user mentality that "I DON'T LIKE THAT HARDWARE, I CAN'T USE IT?"

LOL...like I said..he claims it drops his connection ALL the time...I don't know...I'm never home when he is and vice versa...when I'm home, my netbook works fine...we've been communicating via sticky and email over the past week...he just believes this apple router will solve the world's problems, and I believe it's condescending firmware will drive me batty. But that's just me...so I'm trying to be a good roommate and find a happy medium before he runs out and buys one and I then have to club him over the head with it.

PS. When I've been home, I'll run a constant ping and I don't see any abnormal number of lost packets anywhere.

If there is any truth in your statement then this thread shouldn't have been created.

LOL....now now...just because I used to work in IT and made the transition from solid tech to BA work...doesn't mean I don't understand the thread.

However, it does mean that rather than doing hours of research outside of my comfort zone for a solution to a problem which is non-existent to me, I'd rather save time, and ask here for opinions and recommendations.

I figure my fellow GTamers may have a happy medium for Apple users and PC users...

You don't have to be a total techie to want to ask for opinions =)

Learning new things is part of being in IT, why are you so opposed to educating yourself? I utilize every opportunity to learn something new whenever I'm in this type of situation. Those in IT who fail to learn new things won't be very useful to anyone, at least that's what I've witnessed.

Buy another linksys and upgrade your firmware with this

http://www.google.ca/?q=linksys+tomato+firmware

and btw its "affected"

I second this. I have 4 Linksys WRT54G running tomato and they all work perfectly. I sometimes forget they even exist. Your problem might be a channel overload. tomato lets you know what channels are least used around you to minimize interference.

i LOVE the ASUS RT-N56U, i've no problems with mac or pc on it, yeah it's a little more expensive, i picked mine up for $130+tax, but's sexy as snap, and very stable, nice easy interface for setting up...plus if you have an external hard drive or USB key, just plug into router and share...seriously take a look at it and even a mac user will appreciate it...it handles EVERYTHING...weeee....

I "used" to work in IT, and I'm not opposed to educating myself. I don't see the point in wasting hours researching a solution to a MAC & PC personal preference issue, when I'm now a BA, and have other courses to take to assist in building my knowledge base. ie. just finished my French course, and am on another CIP course. So no, not opposed to educating myself, hence why I'm asking for opinions here, and am looking into the recommendations given.

Again, the "outside of my comfort zone" part is trying to find a solution for MAC users and PC users for a router, outside of the "apple router" as that's what the roomie wants, but not myself.

Thanks for reading.

Linksys makes terrible products. I often wonder why Cisco is trying so hard to lend their good name to it. In case you didn't know, Linksys is owned by Cisco.

As far as recommendations are concerned you can't go wrong with D-Link or Asus brand routers they are quite good. Keep in mind that wireless signals are effected not only by the physical location of the router but also the type of building materials used in the dwelling. Wireless is one of those things that will work if you throw enough money at it; investing in additional access points helps spread the signal out.

Also be aware that just like with other devices routers (regardless of brand) occasionally have updated firmware released for them. The firmware updates can resolve a variety of problems and shouldn't be ignored, so whichever you choose double check that you are using the latest version. Many routers have a limited period of free installation support, that is why it is better to get everything taken care of within the first few days of purchasing the router.

Good luck!

I bought the WRT54G for less than $60 and it has been working like a champ with Tomato. Get signal all the way from top floor to the basement

exactly

Is Sushii your roommate?

LOLz
It must get pretty fishy in there ;)

In some Router firmware, there is an option to "reset" connection. Maybe you can try setting that to "off"

Girl room mate.... lucky guy

Tomato won't help the OP or the roommate. It turns out that the client devices are Atheros-based and AFIK, Tomato only works with BCM and their blobs. Otherwise, it's a good idea. So, if the Mac fanboi gets offended by my cardboard/tinfoil/scotch tape parabolic antenna attachment (who would have thunk it? :D), the Atheros-based TP-Link TL1043ND is the cheapest option, followed by the WNDR3700 (also Atheros-based).

I have the Linksys WRT54G... It's usually fine but sometimes if I'm streaming hd content through the xbox it will take a dump. The streaming will continue but I will lose internet until I reset. It's a fairly minor annoyance unless a certain guest starts complaining.

Broadcom chipset. Not good in an apartment full of clients running Atheros chipset especially when one is already complaining about signal drops. In any case that puny little thing has a 200MHz CPU and 16MB of RAM. It was made before people did multimedia streaming over the network. You wanna stream? You need more juice... And screw wireless for that purpose. Good for light-duty surfing/downloading and not much else.

Would this help?
