New Rider

Hi, I'm a new rider.

I decided to start riding recently as my life finally allowed me to follow my desires from when I was a teenager.
I did my research(thanks mostly to this amazing forum and it's members) and decided on a Honda CBR250RA. Which was made even more smoother by honda selling the 2013 stock at a discount.

I know some people are saying "you should buy used", the problem is, even used the bike is $1000 less then a new one(with taxes etc). So we are getting the brand new one straight from the factory(crate).

I have my helmet and jacket already purchased at home and have to order the boots, gloves and pants.(I tried on the gloves and boots I wanted, but the gloves they had were not the right size and didn't have mine in stock. The boots were fine, but they were floor models that was was left and I wanted new pair).

I am going with an icon Airmada helmet(which i will order a smoky visor for) in red. Icon Anthem Mesh jacket, also in red.
The gloves will be i think it was all-star or something. In red and black. I will have black icon mesh pants and black icon boots(not the super long ones).

A friend in school told me, i would look like a poser for wearing all Icon or whatever, but it's my first set of gear and i want it to protect me, not concerned about looks or "reputation" etc.

I take my friends advice and input to heart, since he is an experienced rider, but i do have to make my own decisions and do my research.

My friend is also the other reason i decided to push ahead with getting my motorcycle license.

I'll spend my first year mostly doing city streets etc, until i am comfortable enough to do highways.

I know your car driving record doesn't seem to matter to some people, but i've been driving for 3 years now, no accidents, no tickets, nothing.

I'm am 38 years old and a very defensive and aware driver, when i drive it's not only my life at stake, it's my passenger(s) and other people on and off the roads lives.

I look forward to many happy years as a rider and maybe at some point riding with other people.

Thanks for reading my very long post.

Good stuff welcome to the forum. Good choice on a first bike.
Dont worry about what people think. Wear what you want. After all you ride for yourself and not others.

Welcome to the forums! So you've only been driving since you were 35? One thing I'll warn you about other drivers is, they just don't see you on a bike. I've almost been hit off multiple times and I've only been riding since last September, so really watch out for cars, trucks busses, and anyone inside a cage on wheels!

Also, do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of A Twist of the Wrist II - it's an eye-opening book on the concepts of motorcycle riding.

You did the right thing by getting all the gear, regardless of what your "friend" may say or think. Safe riding.

welcome

hi and welcome. i have a bunch of icon stuff too... we all have to start somewhere. i think we're both too old to be getting injuries and taking days if not weeks off... save that for the kids.

Hi/Welcome! I love the look of the new 250 CBRs. A guy I did the M2 course got one shortly after and it was really nice up in person, I believe it's a single? Regardless the main point is that you finally have the chance to do what you always wanted.

I have been driving a car for 3 years recently. I did also drive a car when i was in my 20's for about a year. No accidents, tickets etc.
I have driven long distances too, from mississauga to London ontario, Mississauga to Montreal and Mississauga to the US. The london and Montreal trips are once a year, for the last 3 years.

I'll be taking a course at the riderstraining place once I can do it. I see that after M1 you have to wait 2 months before going for M2 and i know the course includes M2 so I have a wait after my M1 for that. I've got my gear bought(ordered for some parts).

I have a Icon Overlord Prime leather jacket and a Icon Airmada helmet(both red).
Ordered the Joe Rocket Superstreet Rx14 Boots, Joe Rocket Speedmater 8.0 gloves, Joe Rocket Blaster 2.0 Perforated leather pants.
Got an all season motorcycle cover and a Ogio no Drag Mach 5 Backpack for my gear.(Since i plan to ride to school.)

I'm sure some of this might seem not great, but it's what I got. Later i'll replace the spine armor in the jacket with the better one.

I'm sure i mentioned this before, but my bike is a 2013 Honda CBR250R ABS.

Just to clarify: you can take the course immediately after getting your M1. If you pass the course/test, they will give you a sealed envelope with your M2 test result. Once the 60 days are up, you just take the envelope to the Ministry and they will formally upgrade your license to an M2.

The learning curve will be much quicker if you do the course right away.

I actually applied to the school last night right after my test and then they called me today and let me know I can do the course earlier and basically what you said. So I moved the date to the first week of June:)

My bike should be at my home next week, with the rest of my gear showing up and then off to school in june, then riding when I get my full M2 and get the insurance. Until then it's posing with my bike and sitting on it and making "Vroom Vroom" noises with my mouth:)

Haha we've all been there going vroom vrooom sitting on the bike in the garage.... wait till winter comes this year, you're going to HATE it here!! :D

Even if you have your M1, you can still get insurance and ride the bike =), so after the course if you feel comfortable enough, just go find a parking lot to practice.

Welcome. You will enjoy the riding. Be safe.
