New rider to the Barrie area

Hey everyone,

My name is Phil and I'm 25. I'm in Borden which is right outside of Barrie. I'm planning on doing a bunch of rides in the GTA because that's where all the riders are!

I've always been a car guy and love working on anything with a motor. I finally got to a point where I'm happy with my car and wanted something different...how about something with two wheels right? So I started looking for a bike in the fall and after looking at a few different bikes I brought my new baby home, 2002 Yamaha R1. I knew I wanted either an R6 or a R1, it was Yamaha or nothing. I like the R6 but then I got on the R1 and I knew it was the bike for me, more comfortable and aggressive at the same time; a perfect balance :) Yes, it's my first bike and I am a beginner rider. I wanted a motorcycle to enjoy riding and experience the road in a new perspective, I'm doing it for me and only me and not for proving myself or showing off to others...that's when keeping it real goes wrong! :)

Anyways, I just thought I would throw together a quick intro and meet some new riders.

The bike came with a few mods but was overall stock. I stripped it down over the winter in my living room and did some basic maintenance plus ordered some goodies for it too. Here is kind of a build thread I started on the R1-Forums over the winter while I worked on it if anybody wants to check it out: http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=348807

Enough words, picture time:

I put a Delkevic exhaust on it and does she ever sound mean. I can't wait to get out on the road to actually hear what this thing will sound like!

Can't forget a quick peak of my awd baby:

Welcome to the site!

Nice bike but you may have jumped the gun a little getting an R1 for your first bike.
That thing will make your awd audi seem like a stock 4 door civic ;)

BTW do you have any experience on a bike at all?

Thank you!

Lol ya couple people have told me that but the ones that know me just told me to keep both wheels on the ground till I get comfortable with it :)

Not really, I've been on dirtbikes and a few of my friend's bikes but no real seat time on normal roads.

I wont lie, the odds are stacked against you. You basically bought the equivalent of a 800hp corvette for your first bike lol

Lol just because it has 800hp, doesn't mean you have to use it :)

Thank you! Will do!

Id love to agree with you, however you have no idea what you're in for.

If you have a bit of time read some of the threads on this topic on the R1 forum. http://www.r1-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75113

And please understand im not telling you this out of hate, im telling you this cause id hate to see another person get hurt.
I doubt many of the regular posters with 1000cc sport bikes frequent this section of the forum, but if you post a topic in the general motorcycle forum asking them if starting on a bike like this is a good idea you'd get plenty of guys telling you otherwise who've spent decades riding and racing.

Anyways if your in the gta and wanna go for a ride lemme know :)

I was asked by someone to comment on this thread, so here it is.

Sign up for an Intro to Track course when you can. You'll learn more in 1 day on the track than you will in 1 year of street riding, and you'll be a way better rider on the street after. If you need more info just let me know.

(P.S. Nice bike, Yamaha for life

Jamie is the GTAM hooligan. Take everything he says with a grain of salt hahahahah ;)

+1 on the track WHEN you get there...

Welcome dude....I'm sure you'll use care and control at first, making wise decisions while you trying to get comfortable...and then as soon as that day comes...oh boy. Take care man.

Welcome to the area and btw no one goes to the city to ride they come north to!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!!

I absolutely plan to do atleast 2 track days this summer! I just want to have the basics down before going on the track and getting intimidated. I'll be PMing you for sure Jamie!

Haha thanks Kool, I'll try!

Ahh kinda makes sense rbjeepthing, it's deff nicer riding out on the open road compared to the city! I love cruising all these back roads in my car, beautiful twisties and some great straights!

I did my intro to track course here (Cayuga/TMP) http://www.torontomotorsportspark.com/raceway/track_school_intro.html

Their first date this year is Sat May 18, get signed up asap! When I took the course there were some complete noobs there. They did the best in the course because they hadn't developed bad habits from street riding, and their brains were more open to what the bike is actually capable of doing.

There is ZERO intimidation on the track, ESPECIALLY at the intro to track course. Only students are out on the track, in groups organized by skill level. It's a super laid back no stress environment. Even on regular track days they have only one group out on the track at a time, the "noob" (green) group, intermediate (yellow), and advanced (red), so you will be riding with people at your skill level, and in green group the skill level starts at zero ;)

Watch Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist II over and over and try and apply everything in that video to your riding. Look THROUGH corners, avoid target fixation, get off the damn brakes, practice downshift blipping while two finger braking, etc. etc.

You guys really think this is the way to go?

Do we teach brand new car drivers how to drive in a F1 car on a race track? ;)

Maybe give the guy some time to get the basics down before he jumps to the track...

lol. He's already bought the F1 car, where is the better place for him to lean how to drive it safely, on our roads covered with garbage and retarded drivers, or on the track where he can learn how to handle it properly??

Welcome to the site, be careful and enjoy your new ride.

I typically head north so if you want to ride shoot me a PM.

~cheers

My first bike was a 400cc Yamaha.. had it for a few months....then 25+ years later I bought a 1203cc Buell.
Ya I rode dirt bikes, snowmobiles, boats atv's and such....was a learning curve ....I lived through it, some can some won't.... fun tryin

Jealous! I wanted either a gsxr 1000 or an r1 but due to about a 9 year gap of no riding I couldn't find my nuts when it was time to buy. So I settled for a really nice 600. While may is out let me know if you decide to do some track time. Might be interested as well. I'm not all that far from you and there's some great roads between your area and mine. If you're up for a ride anytime shoot me a pm.

(my first bike was an interceptor 500. It needed a downhill towards a magnet factory to move :D )
