New rider.....new bike? or used bike?

Hey everyone,

First post here.
I've always wanted to get into riding. Never moved forward with the thought.
Finally looking into moving ahead with licensing and the fun prospect of picking out a bike.

I'm not a kid anymore, and I make a decent living so I have some $$ I can spend.
I like having pretty, shiny things, so I would love to buy a brand new bike.
However, as a new rider, I'm guessing there are some risks of a drop, etc....

So should I suck it up, and buy a used bike and ride it for a year or so, then sell for new.
Or should I just go ahead and buy new.

I like the look of the BMW K1300R.

Thanks!
Dave.

Funny thing about new bikes..... **** happens! :)
Expect to drop it at least once if not more as you learn.
Mine rolled forward off the kick stand several times until I learned to park in gear.

Personally I always buy used, there's already a couple of dings in it and I don't
feel bad if I add a couple more along the way.

If you are comfortable being the one to make the first marks in the chrome or paint, then
get the new bike. Whatever floats your boat.

You like new shiny things, you got the money just buy new and if you drop it you have the money to replace or fix:)

wouldn't hurt to start off on something a little more 'new rider' friendly.
Not saying you shouldn't get the Beemer, but what good will it do when it scares the **** outta you and you never wanna ride it?

You could always purchase a used, but still shiny, one! Just a bike a few years old will have depreciated quite a bit and will still be nice and shiny if the previous owner cared about keeping his bike looking clean.

A ton of used bikes (several years old) will look brand new depending on the owner. Personally I went out with a couple litrebikes one day and they were all in immaculate condition. Everything was clean and polished, no damage anywhere to be found. They were mostly 08-10 models and had good mileage on them. Also saves money and may have a few nice mods for you already.

Just buy used buddy. You can find a spotless one.

Welcome!

In the end you'll buy whatever your nads and wallet want, but for the love of your skin and bones, don't get a litre bike.

Do as Jenna Jameson:

Start small, then progress gradually until you can ride a big one.

My 1+1 cents.

^best advise so far:)

Buy used. You'll be too precious with your brand new shiny bike, adding to the stress of being a new rider. Like people say, you are going to drop it at some point while you're learning. Doesn't mean you have to get a crappy bike. Just get something that's already had a few downs and you really won't get upset you drop it. On the other hand, if you're really not going to care that you just scraped up your shiny new baby, then go ahead and buy new.
Best of luck in either case.

Pretty sure Jenna did mostly lesbian porn as she was in a relationship for most of her porn career and ****ing a dude on set would have been deemed "cheating" by her bf/husband. I could be wrong though. :P

I agree, you have to be really careful with a virgin!!!

Buy something that has experience

Might as well let someone else go through the whole boring break in period while keeping the RPM's low, amirite? With a well used one you can just jump on and rev her all the up to a screaming redline. Maybe the previous owner even invested in some bolt on accessories that you can benefit from.

Thanks for all of the opinions.
bboysushi, you're probably right that I can find some used bikes in excellent condition.
I'll have a look at some pre-owned bikes.

Thanks!

"So should I suck it up, and buy a used bike and ride it for a year or so, then sell for new."

I think you just answered your own question...

Used and small and then upgrade latter. You type of bike preference may also change after a year or so of riding.

Buy used like everyone said, trust me, i consider myself a good rider, and i gave up on buying new, it wears off anyways after a few weeks, as you really can't tell between a new or used new bike, but only if you look at your milage. I've had situations where i was not even riding and my bikes ended up getting damage and it used to piss me off, because i would baby it since i bought them new, but after two new bikes, i just buy now used, i could give a 2 ---- if something happens...streetfighter style all day baby! lol....so yea buy used and customize it for drop ready rather then for a garage queen.

buy a good condition low mileage used starter bike so it feels just like new but doesnt cost as much, i just started riding but i took peoples advice when i bought mine and always remembered your first bike will never be your last.
