New rider in Richmond Hill

Check out the Richmond Hill riders group and Ride thread! The more we get the more rides we can all do.

Mangel, you CAN do fine on an SS as your first bike, but I would strongly advise against it. I had to wait for insurance and I think I'm 10x the rider I would've been if I started on a bike that scared me. The 250 never intimidated me for a second and when I moved up to the SV650 it was all gravy. Now on the Daytona after the first 1000k or so of apprehension and "woops" moments it's an absolute blast. The problem isn't being "respectful" of the bike, it's learning how to operate the bike (shifting, braking, turning) in traffic and in different road conditions and situations. If I started on the 675 my first season I would be dead (no joke) not because of me being an idiot but because of something stupid like missing a shift, or getting flustered, or dumping the clutch by accident, or grabbing too much brake, or not knowing how to rev-match a downshift, or locking the rear, take your pick. If a 250 does something unexpected it's possible for a newb to recover, and it's downright easy for an experienced rider to recover. If the 675 does something unexpected I'm sitting on 112rwhp of "Oh sheit" and all I have is experience and saddle time to cover my butt.

Stay away from VOS Motors...

+1, I started on a 250r, did 13k on that for my first season before moving up to a zx6r. Gotta say I completely agree with the holy ***** moments I had during the first few weeks. Having instincts of counter steering, target fixation and smooth isolated braking saved my life for sure. I remember messing up a downshift on an off ramp and how upset she got, I was surprised lol, first thought in my mind was "wow that would have been scary if I didn't have the 250"

Thanks guys. As of lately I've been hearing the same thing. I value my life so starting on a 300 will be my choice. Going to snow city. Once I'm set I'll see you guys on the road.

As for vos motors.. note taken.

I started on a 250 this year, and I live around the rhill area so just keep an eye on the other thread im always down for a ride. Usually off tue/wed maybe the odd thur and sunday for a ride. All other days after 4pm just shoot me a message. goodluck

I ride a red 250r, my first month riding I did an unintentional wheelie off standstill, had it been a 600cc I think I would have gone down.

I'm not switching yet, I still have A LOT to learn. I'll first master the 250 before switching to a 600. 250R is an excellent bike to learn, I red line and turn hard a lot and it's really fun.
Since the gear ratios aren't so long you get to practice a lot of shifting.

I don't regret getting a 650r but now my opinion has changed on the 250r and I don't think I would have minded starting on one. However the speed on the 650r is tons of fun ;)

The 250 sounds like a ton of fun too, before I was really doubting it as being my first bike but if I had another chance to choose I think it'd be a 50/50 draw

what color? im on a blue 650r now I ride around markham/rhill line I just started hitting major intersections

I miss my 250, great bike especially if you ride to work. I have been riding since I was 13, three times involved in an accident that almost took my life when I was about your age and that was 20 years ago.

Self control is the most important thing, second is knowing your bike inside out.
PM me if you wanna go for a ride on the weekend.

Have a safe ride :)

You either pick a route and ride it, or pick a place and explore on your way to it :p

welcome young rider, I am in the major mac/mccowan area. I currently ride a ninja 250r but plan on moving up to a 400cc JDM import bike soon
