New motorcycle gear store open in Oshawa

How would negotiating a price from a buyer work? Let's say your shop and item for sale owner agree to sell for 200. Item owner is guaranteed 100 dollars. Let's say a buyer offeres to pay 190 for the item. Does the item original item owner get 100 or 95 now? Or is there no negotiating?

Great idea. I might be stopping by with some items.

Who determines how much the item should sell for ? Do you have the final say , or do you have a range in which both the seller and yourself agree on ?

That would be great, please stop by.

When items are brought in we are very interactive with the Seller to determine a fair selling price for each item. We use our experience, on-line resources and catalogs to try to determine what the item may have cost new and what it is currently selling for based on the age and condition of the individual item.

We understand the need to maintain a healthy balance of pleasing Sellers in getting them a fair return on their goods and pleasing Buyers with saving them money on buying pre-owned vs. new.

When an item is brought in on the intake form the Owner of the goods is guaranteed an amount so to use your example if we list your jacket for sale at $200.00 we guarantee you $100.00

If someone makes a reasonable offer on the item we do what Play It Again Sports does and that is contact the owner of the item to let them know about the offer and if they are willing to accept it. Say the offer was $190.00 then both the owner of the item and RE-GEAR split the $190.00

Since many people have mobile devices with email and text we usually can get an answer from the Owner of the goods while the potential Buyer is in the store.

We receive and sell many pre-owned helmets, just yesterday a super nice guy that happens to be a member on this board brought in 4 high quality helmets, all in virtually new condition in and out.

At RE-GEAR the ONLY helmets that are accepted and made available to potential Buyers are ones that have NO visible signs of damage.

In our mind the odd small stone chip is regular wear and tear and is acceptable but a scuff or a large paint chip is not.

A custom painted helmet no matter how nicely done is something you will never see at RE-GEAR as that is a red flag for us.

For a rider on a budget I personally believe that a better investment their safety is the purchase a clean higher end pre-owned helmet, even it is older, than a NEW $129.00 helmet that is polycarbonate shell construction.

Yes the $129.00 has to meet a DOT standard but it is one thing to meet a standard and another thing to far exceed a standard.

Before I settled on a % of the sale I did some market research and found the Consignment stores that deal in pre-owned clothing take 60% of the sale price and give the owner of the goods 40%

I also looked into Play It Again Sports and they are a 50/50 split which is what we decided on.

That being said anyone who has or currently operates a business knows that our margin is not 50% when you factor insurances, licencing, credit card/bank fees etc.

At his point with a new business, wages do not even factor into the mix as I am looking to cover operating costs while the business grows.

Understood, but I had no idea it was that high all around (I've never sold anything through a consignment operation before) so I simply assumed it was much lower.

Out of interest if an item is 100% new (unopened) how much is it normally marked down initially? Also what about an item which has only been used maybe once or twice? Does it take near a 50% hit plus the 50% consignment (meaning both the seller and RE-GEAR get around 25% of the MSRP value)? Again, I've never sold anything this way before hence my questions.

Just wondering, would there be some kind of catalog for buyers? I'm on the west end it's a bit far to just go browse.

EDIT: Saw the website, there's a "COMING SOON" section for featured items.

I will be shopping there for sure.

I just did lol Walked in with absolutely no intention to buy and walked out with a nice leather Shift jacket for what I thought was a pretty good deal. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Both Alex's are awesome. Great to talk to, really easy going, and their selection is pretty good. They even have cd's, movies, and other stuff there to browse through. Just have to say thanks for the jacket!

There is no set in stone formula of pricing items that are still new with tags and pricing attached.

We know that very few, if any items are sold at MSRP usually the buyer paid less and in some cases way less.

What we try to determine is what the market is currently charging for that item via resources such as ebay and other on-line vendors.

There are other factors that affect pricing, is the market flooded with the same item?

It may be new but is it still desirable/in style?

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your business, we appreciate it!

Just wondering how much money the other Alex slipped you on the side to say those nice things about him? ... just kidding, thanks for the kind words!

Enjoy the jacket and bring that new Yamaha of yours by so we can see it.

Good luck in my hood. Not sure about location though you have the two biggest players in the sport in your back yard. I know a local shop that completely stopped selling gear as they couldnt compete. Used is an interesting twist though. How does your insurance company take it? Mine told me to give that stuff away if I sell it I am taking a liability risk that its safe and they wont cover me on it?

What if I bring stuff in and you sell it. Would you give out store credit instead of cash?

If you prefer a store credit instead of cash then we could certainly do that and as in incentive we would reduce our cut from 50% to 40% as it obviously benefits us if you buy something else in store, instead of cashing out.

The response so far has been very positive from both Sellers and Buyers in respect to pre-owned and being next door to Precision Cycle that specializes in servicing motorcycles has been beneficial to us and to them I hope, one business compliments the other.

I have great relationships with both GP Bikes and Royal Distributing and I personally regularly shop at both.

For the Customer that buys new at either of those places if the Customer asks certain staff "where can I sell the product I just replaced with new" they will be direct to RE-GEAR and if a Customer comes to us and we do not have what they are looking for I will suggest they visit there.

We have insurance in place to sell pre-owned and the company is aware of every type of item we sell. There are credible insurance companies that provide full coverage for pre-owned stores, Play It Again Sports a North America wide franchise company is a good example.

Very smart - best of luck for a successful business.

We appreciate the support from the forum members that have visited the new store.

The Oshawa store has been such a great success that I am in the process of opening up a second store to service the Kawartha Lakes region.

It will be located in Lindsay one building North of Lindsay Cycle.

Awesome place and great service. I emailed Alex with what I was looking for (leather suit). He replied back that there were 2 in stock in that might fit me. Went there the next day, tried one on and bought it. Simple and would definitely shop there again.

While i havent bought anything yet ( just bad luck on sizing) they have great turnover in stock,I would recommend buyers keep checking in . Very impressed with prices and their consignment policy.
Great idea!
