The nice think about old Yamahas is they are hard to kill. There are lots of forums that provide decent tech support, parts aren't hard to find, and they are not too hard to work on and keep in good running shape. I keep a few old Yammies in the stable.
Just for giggles pop the fuel cap open and repeat my FJ had a intermittent issue with the fuel tank venting drove me crazy at the time diagnosing the problem.

Agreed. Check fuel tank cap diaphragm. I had an issue with mine. There is a quick mod for it. I still ride my FJ 1986. Owned it since 1990. Lots of info on the fj owners forum.
In 1992 took the FJ1200 down the Blue Ridge to Deals Gap. Sport Bike Rally in Parry Sound for 17y as well as Americade. Camping gear loaded. Its a great old sport touring machine.
