New emission test cluster ****

So my car was off for 2 months before the test, the battery died, the morning before the test I unplugged the battery and put in the one form my wifes car, then drove straight to CT for the test, my car passed.

I am not sure if this helps anyone, but if you think your car is not going to pass, disconnect the battery and connect it back just before you go for the test.

My car is a 2002 Honda Civic, funny thing is that the day after, the check engine light came on lol..pfewww

Should have failed. When you unplug the battery and don't drive enough so that all the systems are ready you'll get an automatic fail...or atleast you should. But then again there is no consistency with this test..

Bad advice. I can't explain how you passed the test but in most cases a recently unplugged battery will cause a fail.

I played with my obd tester quite a bit. Someone had a car with an evap related check engine light. In my experience most sensors are ready in less than 30 mins. The evap can take over a day. I cleared the codes, drove around CT a bit, and when all but the evap monitors were ready I took the car in. Since you are allowed to have one monitor not ready the car passed. A day latter the CEL was back.

If anyone needs an OBD scan in milton I can do it.

You are right, it is bad advice and i have no idea how I passed the test, but the only reason I am giving it is because if you are certain you are going to fail, why not try it out, nothing to lose.

If this helps, I had to drive 48 Km in a mix of streets and HWY to get to the Canadian Tire I wanted to go to.

Makes more sense now

Didnt know that you could have one system not ready, good to know.

1 for newer cars
2 for older cars

Dunno the years, google around for ontario emission faq. I dont have OBD so my worries are different. I just put in new cats on my car. Apparently cost of cat replacement is not part of repair limit.

Ah yes, I feel ya. As a last ditch resort unplug the battery, do a drive cycle and hope for the best.

The new OBD test for Drive Clean will allow two monitors to be “Not Ready” if the vehicle model year is 1998 to 2000; and one monitor to be “Not Ready” if the vehicle model year is 2001 or newer. If more than the allowed monitors are “Not Ready”, the vehicle will not pass the OBD emissions test.

In one sense its kind of pointless if the e-test was designed to catch emission related stuff...

evap systems are a big time polluter in themselves if they are allowing fuel vapors to escape. If you are allowed to "pass" with the evap system in "not ready" kinda defeats the purpose? Oh right, its a money grab, so "test" away....

First, I told you so, last year, others here did to, on this very site, people didn't listen... Drive Cleans are good for one full year, if you owned the car last December and did not bring it in under the old system you have no one to blame but yourself, people were warned... Even the press was warning people... Now that I have that out of the way.... (and BTW, just renewed my plates with the DCs I did the last week of December 2012. Both cars would have passed the new test today, but why risk it, I cannot see the future...).

Since we do not have time machines, if you need a drive clean in the next 12 months and drive a "not new" (older) car and the car has no CIL on today, do it now or soon. Do not wait until a month before your birthday to find out you have some evap issue etc. that came up between now and then. Take the pass when the pass is automatic.

BTW, anyone with a decent OBDII tester can tell you if you will pass or fail, they just need to know what to look for, look at the monitors and for codes. Might be worth having a look yourself or having a buddy do it before taking it in (to save some $$$s on a wasted failed test).

As for what the gov is doing. The old system was flawed, the new system is flawed in different ways. I know of cases where cars failed the tailpipe in dec but passed on the new system in jan. I also know of people who passed under the old system but would fail the new... So in short, if they (Ontario Gov) were at all concerned about emissions, they should be doing the OBDII test AND tailpipe. Not saying I want them to do this but...
