New DRZ-4S and DRZ-4SM

'new'? or lipstick on a pig.
Both? Newish. New injected engine but similar power curve. Traction control settings now.

Or if you meant the lackluster performance for a 400cc supermoto, you have to give up performance if you want standard street bike maintenance intervals and reliability.

I saw this yesterday and was actually excited that I could stop using the 24 year old DR-Z400 as a punchline. I immediately got distracted by other things though

I think "newish" is underselling it a little. New frame & suspension on top of the fuel injection and dashboard. It has ABS! ... but it gained 16 lbs, and it still doesn't have a sixth gear. The engine is refreshed but not new.

Honestly I am shocked it got an update. I always figured Suzuki would just straight up drop the model once the tooling wore out, or emissions made it impossible to sell anywhere

You can still use the 28+ year old DR650SE, which returns unchanged for Canada in 2025.

Why they would redesign the DRZ and keep it a 5 speed is beyond me. Also would have loved it to have got a bit of a cc bump to a 450 maybe to have another good street 450 SM option. Still going to be a good bike I'm sure, I've owned and heavily modded a ton of them by now so I'm a fan.

Actually, I have a stroker crank drz462 motor apart in my basement right now.

Not all bikes need 6 gears. I have a big DR with 5 speeds, it just doesn't need another gear -- all I'd get is more shifting! Same with my 5-speed FJR -- it has the same top speed but a faster 1/4mile than it's 6 speed sister.

What is your expectation of another gear? It won't go faster, and the minuscule gain you might get from an extra gear in acceleration would be wiped out by shifting time.

In a time where almost every bike, street and dirt is six gears, I'm just surprised a newly designed motor as they claim stuck with 5. Yes the ratios could be set-up fine with 5 gears though. An extra also doesn't hurt, especially a overdrive 6th. I often find myself searching for a 6th cruising gear, but not wanting to affect the acceleration in lower gears by changing sprocket pairings to bring down 5th cruise rpm.

Apparently the internal ratios have been revised.

Will be curious to see how they compare to the current. There was an aftermarket gear set available for the DRZ that a fair amount of people added over the years when adding power mods. It was expensive and required a bit of case modifications though.

The benefit would be to not roll down the highway at 7000RPM

The DR big and FJR have plenty of torque and they can get by with large jumps between gears the 400 on the other hand is lacking in grunt and would be a good candidate for a closer ratio gearbox and hence more gears would be a asset.
