New BMW ?

Did anyone order a new BMW earlier this year and still awaiting for it's arrival?

A riding Bud placed an order with Buds in February and they keep moving his delivery date from April now into June. Lots of excuses such as lack of container ships at the German docks, Covid delays, talk of flying out cargo planes that went nowhere, etc.

They offered him a nominal price break of a couple of hundred bucks but he is getting anxious. Really, at over $32G's one would think that some priority would happen.

Everything is backed up, supply chain is a disaster because of Covid. The dealer can't sell what BMW Canada can't provide.

BMW canada should be the one stepping up incentives. By the time he gets the bike, it may be a new non-current and therefore would have sold for less.
If he even gets it and loses out on a full riding season.

The alternative is to cancel the sales contract and then look around for something in a dealer's inventory ?
And that's why I think bmw canada should be proactive as this drags out. They dont want most of their 2021 order for sale next spring with their entire 2022 order. Keeping current buyers on the line is easier than finding new buyers. Take some money off, throw in some accessories or gear and everybody wins.

Logical....but...COVID and money mean they’ll just try to sell current stock for full pop or more.

Stuff like that doesn't usually happen until late August or September.

Which model?

What does the sales contract say in regards to the delivery date? Most vehicle contracts have a default 3 month delivery window that buyers should review and change if needed.

At this point it looks like BMW has some or all models in short supply, which usually means price goes up if demand is strong. So this guy has to make a decision to try and cancel his contract or to just wait.

There's no ill will here on Budd's part. Sounds like they're caught up in a global supply chain issue.

I purchased a 2003 ST1300 in December 2002 and had a delivery date in the contract of April 1, 2003. Delivery issues with Honda everywhere that spring and I cancelled my contract and got my deposit back 1st week of June.. Purchased my 2002 ST1100 3 days later from a different dealer. Following Monday ST1300 dealer calls me to say they just got the bike and did I still want it???? Kind of frustrating..........., but the 1100 was a good bike, had it for 18 years

I’m waiting. The issue is the shipping container shortage apparently. It sounds like there are now some bikes on the way over, so hopefully we will get our bikes soon (and dealers will actually have some to sell!).

My delivery was supposed to be May but has moved to late May/early June. BMW are offering a small rebate at this time, but I’m guessing that would only increase if delays continue.

Bingo.

Lots of delays at the port, lots of blank sailing weeks and there’s a supply chain issue. If you ordered a model with the Hayes brakes recall then it’s probably even worse.l, since they can’t release the bike until the recall is performed.

I don’t think dealers should be blaming COVID. I recently bought from a Polaris dealer, normally the dealer would have stock or be able to get the bike in a week.

They made it clear that Covid was impacting deliveries, then gave me a 2 week delivery window a few months from the day I signed the deal. I got periodic updates bike started - here’s the vin, bike finished, bike shipped here’s the tracking info. They delivered on time. Great Covid conditions customer service.

As for container shortages, true, but containers are available they just cost more. We bring a container from Hamburg to Montreal monthly, we are paying a premium but we get containers.

I believe bmw supplies their dealers with detailed tracking info, tell your buddy he can see exactly where his bike is in the cycle through the dealer.

Containers are one thing, doesn’t solve blank sailings. I’ve had to re route freight across countries to another port entirely due to 2 weeks + of no ships.

When I bought my GS, the floor model at the dealership wasn't exactly what I wanted. I had the option of ordering one specced to my liking, but it was set to be a June delivery (this was back in late February).

Glad I ended up buying the floor model, my order would have been delayed most certainly.

The dealer threw in all the bits and pieces to make it the way I wanted and I've been riding every single day since March, so in the end everyone was happy.

Not COVID exclusively....more like a perfect storm of issues. These are unprecedented times (COVID alone lol).

He ordered the R1250 I believe.

Lots of good feedback guys, I will direct him to them.
If it's an R1250RT, there have been several production and delivery issues that have particularly upset US buyers who've been waiting a very long time. Canada has actually been better off although I understand there was a port strike at Montreal that might have threatened deliveries. The chip shortage has had BMW shipping bikes without radios and without TPMS. There was some confusion about whether orders had to specify "radio prep" to be able to install radios at a later date. BMW is offering a reduced price for TPMS installation at some later date.

Heard that BMW shipments land in Halifax, so the backup in Montreal shouldn’t be an issue. 🤞🏻
