So in the long run you are only saving $500, to drive a car with a high performance engine.

The problem in this case is that you are paying the high performance engine premium in terms of fuel mileage without the high performance. Even mazda's own MS3 outperforms the rx8 both in a straight line and on the track while getting better fuel economy.

Get a ninja 250 instead

mine is for sale !
dude, you own a bike, people steal bikes, you have now given the address where you keep your bike...not smart, you are welcome

I don't remember reading a single review that spoke poorly about the RX8's driving characteristics. Obviously not the most factual, but here's the Top Gear review, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRiPSlx8PxA Sure there are many negatives, but it's a reasonable decent looking, rear wheel drive, decently well equipped car, that handles great, at a good price. There's nothing out there like it.

Don't think I'd want to own one long term. However leasing it or owning it and selling it when the warranty runs out is definitely tempting. Would definitely take it over a MS3, regardless of quarter mile time

Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason. I haven't owned one, but I have seat time in one at shannonville. I found the motor gutless and its shocking to me that a 1.3 litre engine uses more fuel than a 7.0 litre z06 while making less than half the hp. In my opinion, the negatives far exceed the positives. Apparently most ppl agree given the decision to discontinue the car. If you want a sporty japanese rwd car for 20ish K, you are better off paying a bit more and getting a used S2000 or 350z which is just as good in the handling dept, a far better motor and greater reliability.

Btw. the MS3, despite being handicapped by wrong wheel drive, still laps the nurburgring time quicker than the rx8 :)

My experience with the RX8 was a simple road test, during which I liked the engine response and handling, or whatever I saw of it at least. Don't want to say it's the best car ever, but I really do feel it's under appreciated.

Remember that barely anyone bought the last gen RX7 or Supra either when they were in production, look what they go for now. I know bad comparison, just showing the public doesn't necessarily know what they want when they see it.

As for the MS3, I'm sure the performance is fantastic. But I feel the same way towards it as I do to a WRX or Evo. They're all very fast, but at the end of the day they are tarted up economy cars, with economy car interiors and build. If I'm paying premium car money, I expect premium everything, not just performance.

pretty sure you can't get premium anything for the price of a MS3. That isn't "premium car money" to me.

The price of an evo is getting into premium car money. at 50 gs.

What car gives you "premium everything" for the price of a MS3?

Premium wasn't the right wording, should have said something like "above econo". For my imaginary $30k, I'd get a GTI or Cooper S

Every car is a compromise between various factors like features, performance and cost. In my view, if you are buying a sports/sporty car, performance should be the main thing - if you cant check the box on that attribute, then whatever features it has is a moot point. I know acceleration isnt everything, but its not something that should be overlooked either. Frankly, I dont think its acceptable to be driving a so called sports car that would have the paint sucked off of it in a drag by some soccer mom in a v6 camry or accord (which incidently, still gets better fuel mileage lol).

To each his own, of course. Incidentally, the sports car that everyone seems to be waiting for right now, the FT86/BR-Z would get demolished in a drag strip against a V6 Accord or Camry

At least in the case of the FT86, the fuel economy (30 mpg) and price (MSRP low-mid 20k) are commensurate with its performance. It probably wont require owners to top up their oil every 2 tanks of gas either lol.

In any event, Im willing to be most enthusiasts will wait for the forced induction version that subaru / toyota has confirmed will be coming out after the launch of the n/a version.

If you're a mechanic just buy a used one for $15k. Financing a car is like throwing money down the toilet.

+1 to that.

There are many options out there.

That says more about the family sedans than the sports coupes. It also says more about what people think performance means than what it actually means.
