Need thoughts on a bike

I’m back once again I’ve started the hunt for my first bike found one on Kijiji for $3500 it’s a 2011 ninja 400 slight cosmetic damage from a static drop. It does have 40,000km on it but according to seller had the breaks, oil, battery and filters either inspected or changed recently. Parents are a little hesitant with a 2011 but I thought y’all might have more knowledge 1C07D4C8-05F2-4AA3-9B76-66824CC16662.jpeg

That's the older Ninja 400, which is a sleeved-down Ninja 650. It wasn't the most popular model, but it would be a fine first bike. That particular one has damage on both sides (the stickers are almost certainly covering up a bunch of scrapes) and the tank dent is quite large, so it probably wasn't a single zero-speed drop. Getting a cosmetically beat up bike isn't a bad idea as your first bike, but you'd want to have a close look at it in person to make sure everything is straight. Used vehicle prices are all out of whack these days, but the price on that one seems a bit high for the condition.

Looks like a 1500 to 2000 certified bike.

Makes sense thanks though I will say this I will have enough very soon for a bike I really like. A brand new 2021 ninja 400 ABS my parents really like it 4B19AA0A-4E25-40B5-99B4-5B2FFE7B67B2.jpeg

I feel like I see a lot of good beginner bikes between the $4000-$4500 range that are newer, with less mileage. And either less or no damage at all.

If you've got the money and the insurance is similar, I would 100% take the new Ninja 400 over the old Ninja 400. Especially if the new one has ABS.

I’ll have to take a harder look then unfortunately I’m a bit limited by distance I gotta borrow my parents jeep to pick it up most likely as I’ll be fresh out of my M2 riders course with still very little experience. Parents won’t let me go further than like Toronto distance so about 45 mins to 1hr 30 min drive

Have you sat on one of these yet? Was it you in the other thread saying you were 6'5 ish?
Not yet but I messaged the dealer to see if they had one I could look and and sit on. Likely still got a good month- 2 months before I’m getting a bike

That’s an idea that totally slipped my mind thanks for the reminder. I’ll do some digging though gotta put a pin it tonight. I have adhd and my meds are wearing off and I know if I look at anymore bikes I’m gonna end up on a hyper focus rabbit hole and be looking at bikes for the next 4hrs straight

Also I will say this not super concerned about price my main focus is the insurance costs so about 400cc seems to be my max for my insurance to stay “reasonable”. Only reason I looked on kijiji and auto trader tonight is just incase I found the bike I wanted at a really good deal but overall money isn’t a super big issue my job pays well enough

$3,500? I know the bike market is nuts but...LOL

I'd reduce any offer by $1k at least and tell them to certify it for safety. If he balks, offer $100 deposit against agreed upon price so he can go get safety done.

Not going to fit you.

That's the newer model post 2008 after a 40 year run with the same model. These bikes hold their value as they are the closest to a do all machine you can go around the world on, commute or do limited off pavement which would be excellent training for you.

I put a lot of km on mine over 10 years in Australia, bought the 2004 for $4200 and sold for $2800.
Durable beast and the correct size for you.

This might fit you - should be 32" at the highest setting

and there are high seats available for it

I appreciate it unfortunately every insurance quote I’ve gotten for a bike above 500cc has been ludicrously high. I’d rather be a little cramped and uncomfortable for a few years and be able to afford insurance then go for something bigger once the insurance rate drops for me

What happened to the KTM 390 Adventure?
It’s still an option but honestly gonna see if I can find one a little cheaper also I think I’m gonna go for more of a street/ sport bike over a dual sport as the more I’ve talked to people and thought about it I’ll basically just be doing paved road driving and highway driving. Might go for the 390 duke as it’s a little cheaper than the adventure but still gonna keep my options open. I gotta say I’m kinda sweet on the 2021 ninja 400 ABS I posted and price is about $1k under the 2022 390 adventure plus ngl ninjas have always been one of my dream bikes

basically my goal is to get a list of about 5 or 6 bikes that will do what I will use them for and are in a similar price point then when it’s time to buy I can see what’s available around me both new or used and narrow down my purchase
