In the market for a new string trimmer for around my house. Looking to replace my VERY OLD battery trimmer with something newer and more powerful.
Don't have a lot to trim, maybe 15-20 minute total run time, but would like something I can do some edging with as well. If I can keep it under $200 I'm happy

I already seen all the ones at HD, CT and Amazon, but thought I'd ask you fine folks, what are you using, or have purchased and your thoughts.

Thanks.

Are you sticking with batteries? That's going to be tight on budget. If you have tool batteries, you might be able to find a bare tool in the ballpark. Milwaukee trimmer with battery is pushing $500 these days which is crazy imo. Check ihl or atlas for solid pricing.

Yes Batteries, now sure I I need a "Pro" brand. As stated it is used about 20 minutes a month. My current one (non removable battery) is 15 years old and I paid 99 bucks for it new. At this point it still has enough charge to do a single pass, but I am doubtful it will see another summer.

Could probably just open up the casing and replace the cells in your current trimmer. Might be able to find a pre-assembled swap kit with the soldering already done for <$50. Lots of videos on the tube about replacing power tool batteries if you need inspiration.

Do you have any other large tools that have batteries? buy that trimmer and share batteries as GreyGhost recommended.

I know you said battery but I’ve had this one for 5 years now and it’s been excellent and always starts first pull. Easy to swap ends to other attachments that you might want like a mini chainsaw or whatever which could save some money/space in the end. I also only put 15ish minutes of use a week on it and a tank of fuel last a LONG time.

Mine's corded, but so is the mower. Both around 15 yrs old.

Thanks guys, guess I'll just stick with what I have for another year.

Nope, just the string trimmer.

What he said.
Mine (gas) is so old, I had to replace the head last week.....it was all worn down...but it still runs perfectly.
For what I need I think this will be way too much. Bunch of ballers on this site... LOL

We went with Ryobi 40 volt mower, trimmer and blower. It does about 1500 square feet of lawn with enough left to trim a bit of edge. The blower is good but there are several models, all 40 volt. Some have more MPH and other more CFM. It depends on what you need to do with them. We run one battery as the spares are green plated gold bars.

There are mutterings about noisy garden tools but laws won't change this week.

There is one person leading the charge in toronto for quieter lawn equipment (and a leaf blower ban). As expected, he's not young. I don't know how many more years he can continue to bang the drum and put in the effort for change. I applaud his effort and dedication even if I don't entirely agree with his goals.

I had an old infrared camera that used obsolete 6 volt batteries that cost a small fortune. With nothing left to lose I put a jack into the housing and ran a cord to a 6 volt battery pack hooked onto my belt. It got me a few more years.

My neighbour seems to know when I'm watching TV in the rec room and it acts as an echo chamber for his B&S mower so I too understand. However a gas mower can last 20 years and costs less than a mower battery that's good for half that.

I tried to get them to better align people using gas engines. As it is now, for most of the summer there is at least one running during all daylight hours in every subdivision. If they windowed the time they were allowed, everyone would cut their grass in that window and it would be louder for a bit but then quiet for the rest of the day. I failed.

I have a Ryobi mower/trimmer/Blower that are on the 40V platform. Bought it when they first came out on promotion. Got the trimmer and blower for free. Without question I would do it again. I have no clue what just the trimmer costs, but it's probably worth it. Not having to winterize crap like that is always a plus.

I have one of them expensive Milwaukee M18 units that you can use the same power head to power a string trimmer, hedge clipper, pole saw, edger and power broom. It's the cats meow.

Paid a fair bit of cash for it, but less than buying a gas trimmer and a decent hedge clipper separately. So if you have other outdoor power tool needs it's a good option.

Before that when I owned a house with a smaller lot I had a Ryobi 18v basic string trimmer that worked very well for a small suburban lawn. Bonus with that one was it was 18v cordless, but if you took the battery out you could plug it into 110v and now it's a corded trimmer. Handy if you forgot to charge a battery or something like that.

The Ryobi was ~$120 15 years ago. the battery only version was ~$90

is it really that troublesome to add a bit of stabilizer before putting away for the season?

my Honda gas trimmer is going over 20 years now, no reason it wont go another 20. $250 or so I paid for it, stretched over 40 years is a bargain.

doubt you would get more than 5 years out of a battery and todays plastic junk.

Dump fuel, run it dry til it stalls. Takes all of a few seconds every Fall.
