Need a light 'street legal' dirt bike... Any advice?

Yamaha WR250. If I were taller I'd love one

Only the ones with signals. The ones with just headlight/brakelight aren't street legal.

So they don't come blue plated because they don't have signals, or because they just don't? Doesn't make sense to me why they would bother putting headlight and break light on an offroad only bike.

Signals are required to be street legal. I don't know why they don't come on all the enduro models.

Pretty much all enduro bikes come with headlight and brakelight regardless of the on road capability. Headlights are plenty useful offroad. Especially when you get stuck riding at night.

Interesting, I wonder how my buddies husky 250 2T has a blue plate with no signals.

So to be blue plate they have to come with signals then? Is that what your saying? But signals aren't a legal obligation to have.

Yes headlights are useful.

Huh? KTM, Husqavarna, pretty sure GasGas has one or two. I'm not sure about the Japs though.
You sure about the Husky's? When I was looking at a couple models they were all not street legal. Couldn't really find any sites in Canada that list them and indicate which ones are actually road legal, though.

Tire, exhaust, emissions, ....
only the exc's are street ready from ktms enduro line up.

before 07 the exc's weren't even street ready.

I'm 100% sure about husky and gasgas, I was 90% sure about KTM. I just know what the guys I ride with have.

Ive seen blue plates of husky and gasgas.

It seems to be about having a good relationship with a dealer and they can wiggle bikes in as blue plates.

Find a blue-plated KTM 2 Stroke. My 250xc-w will cruise at 95 and still do singletrack on the same gearing. I do have a Rekluse though. I can also pick it up with one hand after a crash.

I have my 2004 ktm 250 exc 2 stroke for sale. Its currently blue plated and is in great shape with a few aftermarket goodies. Check it out:

Which two stroke ktms are street legal?

Lol, look above. I didn't even notice.

They dont come from the factory blue plated.

You used to be able to convert a bike from green to blue plate, not anymore.

Bikes that get converted now really shouldn't be. It only happens when someone at the MTO doesnt know any better.

All the blue plated 2 strokes didnt come street legal from the factory.

The rules changed more than fiv...........blah, why bother.

You're right, I'm wrong.

Looks like this is turning into a pee-pee fest. So here's my .02 cents. 01cbr is right, the law changed in 2007 requiring ALL bikes to pass Canadian inspections from the factory. Just last week I bought the OP's Husqvarna from him(great guy) because I didn't want the hassle of changing ownership of a "not totally legal bike" that had been blue plated by a buddy's buddy who is related to that person within the MTO........blah blah blah. As we speak there is a blue plated 2008 Suzuki RMZ450 for sale on Kijiji. I actually emailed him before my purchase and to be honest it sounded fishy to the point I said f-that. Long story short, yes illegal bikes do get blue plated but is it worth the hassle? Not IMO

Yes why bother going on when you dont know what your talking about.

Yeah, what do I know. My buddy doesn't ride a 2009 husky 250 2T that he bought last November. Nor did another guy have a 2011 gasgas six day 2T thing that was blue plated. Or the two people that I quoted.

I have no idea what I'm talking.

Whatever though. The OP has received information.

None of which came from the manufacture street ready.

Last year I rode a blue plated 300 xc-w.....yet my 400 exc cant legally be blue plated...weird???

I can say with certantity that you will not find any new 2 stroke bikes from the factory blue plated in Ontario. They would never pass emissions. Ktm currently has two dirt bikes that are blue plated from the factory . 350 EXC (which I have) and 500 EXC. Both these bikes are choked up with smog equipment (which everyone removes) in order to pass emissions in Canada and US. And these are 4 strokes. There are rumors of KTM releasing an FI two stroke. Maybe this will be clean enough to pass and be blue plated. I would love a blue plated 2 stroke but as previous poster stated its a grey area especially if you somehow snuck around the current laws.

This.

And once blue plated it can stay that way as long as you don't make the mistake of registering it for offroad. I've come across plenty of blue plated bikes that have absolutely none of the required equipment to be on the road.
