Need a light 'street legal' dirt bike... Any advice?

I have a husky TE 450 which is street legal but very heavy in the dirt. I ride mostly mud and loose rock/gravel in Haliburton, with some single track once in a while in the Ganny.

I'm not getting any younger and feel that I need something lighter that i can throw around a little more but that still can run the highway for 15 km's or so to get to the trails.

Any suggestions, 250? 300? 2s/4s? Blue plate-able or fully street legal?

Thanks for your advice.

What year is your TE450? I know "dry weights" are sometimes a little misleading and often calculated differently - but the posted dry weight for my 2007 te450 is 237lbs vs a 2013 ktm 250xc-w's dry weight of 225lbs.

That's not to say the KTM won't FEEL much lighter in the trails, but I've never found the te450 to feel like a heavy bike personally... how tall are you?

I'm looking at a TE449 2011yr to buy for myself in the next few months. I want something that's blue plated. PM me if your looking to sell when you have found a lighter bike for yourself. Thanks in advance and good luck with your search.

Find a blue-plated KTM 2 Stroke. My 250xc-w will cruise at 95 and still do singletrack on the same gearing. I do have a Rekluse though. I can also pick it up with one hand after a crash.

I was about to say it would be hard to find a blue plated 2stroke and then the next post someone has one for sale. Would buy it myself if I didn't already have a bike

Lots of new 2-strokes still getting blue plated.

Does anybody have any thoughts re 2 stroke vs 4 stroke?

How will the 2s run in heavy mud and rocky hill climbs as compared to the 4s?

How about gas mileage range on the trails?

As always your opinion is appreciated.

There are lots out there.

Depending on what model you get you just have to ride them differently. The 250s aren't as peaky as they used to be. Mine has no trouble lugging up a hill. The KTM XC and XCW are built for woods riding. You'll have to seal up the airbox if you want to hit any deep water or mud but the bike will easily handle anything you want to throw at it. Fuel range is comparable to most other bikes.

Really ? How are they managing to do this ? I know before the rules changed people were doing it. If I thought I could do it I would pick up a new KTM 250 2 stroke and lic it

^^ Usually for this to happen you have to "know someone who knows someone" or try up north somewhere.

As long as they come from the manufacturer street ready. Also some just by mistake. Believe it or not, but sometimes those nice efficient people at service Ontario make mistakes. :)

I am not aware of any manufacturer that makes a street legal 2 stroke. I suppose there are some really old dual sports that were street legal from the factory but that must be going back to late seventies early eighties .

Huh? KTM, Husqavarna, pretty sure GasGas has one or two. I'm not sure about the Japs though.

Which two stroke ktms are street legal?

I'll go out on a leg and say the enduro classed bikes are all blue platable. I didn't want to waste GP bikes time by calling and asking though.

No two strokes, and only a couple of 4 stroke enduro bikes come from KTM street ready.
