My friend's '99 R1... aye carumba!

A friend of mine picked up a '99 R1 today with plans on converting it to a track bike. It's being stored and worked on in my garage over the winter. It showed up today. I have two words: AYE CARUMBA! Even Worf would agree, and you'll see why.

So the PO thought it would be a great idea to make the bike look like Worf's forehead... err, I mean... a dragon. Every part of plastic is coated in pleather/vinyl and every part that he couldn't stick pleather on, he rattle-canned black.

I might get nightmares from that bike.

The leather part is kinda cool but the part that looks like the forehead is scary. What's up with the paint. lol Does he like it?

No, thank Gawd it's being stripped down for race plastics. I was trying to make him feel better about the bike this afternoon. He looked a bit distraught with his purchase. I said, "If it was a matter of not riding at all, or at least riding that. I'd ride that. Better than riding nothing." His response, "I'd rather walk!" LOL

He's down there stripping the bike down now. And I noticed that the PO didn't rattle can paint the entire frame and subframe. Just the parts you could see. Makes it a bit less work to strip off, right? :o

Wow - that's ... something? ;)

I spent my first hours stripping my bike down to bare frame, but at least I only had barn storage conditions to deal with - nothing other-worldly ;)

Aw man pore guy.

it always amazes me the amount of money people will spend on the most hideous looking ideas. but hen again... it did look good to them.

I saw that thing on kijiji and thought the same thing. "What the heck is that guy thinking?" building that.

Why? The idea of race plastic is to have bodywork other than the good stock stuff to damage (for a track bike).

I couldn't think of any other bodywork I would want to see sliding down the track than what's on it right now.

This one looks like a case of "beauty is in the eye of the beer holder"... :D

I seen this bike forsale too....lol
what else was wrong with it besides the apperance?
as I recall the ad said it didnt run either.

i was thinking track bike also, when i seen it forsale

I LOLed IRL! Very true! :lmao:

Everything has been stripped off of it. It was discovered that a mouse was living in the airbox. Air filter is all chewed into bedding and it's winter stockpile of seeds is socked away in there. No mouse, though. The bare frame and engine looks 10000000x better than the hideous crap that was on it.

Those pleather-covered plastics didn't fit anyway. The PO also didn't use OEM fairing bolts and you could just pull the fairings off by hand with little effort. They were just sort of sitting on there. It would never have passed a tech inspection. If the thing could roll, it would leave a trail of Gawd awful tacky fake leather debris behind it.

It was discovered that the bike was that lovely OEM blue before the PO violated it. Something like this:

How depressing. Some people should not be allowed to own bikes. Ever. :P

I'll buy the front fairing and headlight if your friend if he would like to help another rider out :D

EDIT:

I mean the whole front area, like the belly pan andside fairings too... basically just not the tail.

No problem. I'll let him know. I will warn you, though. All that pleather was glued onto the plastics. It might be a bit of work to strip it off.

EDIT: Just texted him. Your's when you want to come by. :)

Ah, I'm pretty sure it always looked like that. I.e., the wheels and brake calipers are badly hand painted with globs of paint. The 'detail' work on the frame, front fender and tire hugger are terribly executed. The fairings don't fit because the pleather bulked them up so much, they no longer matched up with the fairing stays. Huge gaps around the headlights because the head cowl no longer fit.

The pics I posted actually make the bike look about 10x better than it actually is.

Btw, the PO is a liar as well. He advertised it as a '99 and insisted it was. It's a '98, not a '99. He also tried to say it was FI.
