Just home from a 5 day trip to Deals Gap.
Beautiful weather, The best public roads possible, great people, lots of Ontario plates and my confidence levels are way up .

I did some minor, and major mods to the 10 recently, and can report that I am VERY happy with my bike this year. No more chicken strips hahaha!

Cool! I am planning a solo ride there this summer, so maybe you can help out from your experience..

How long did it take to get there?
Did you stay in the local motel, if so what was the room availability like? Just wondering how far ahead I need to plan as I'm sort of the last minute type..
How was the pace on the roads? Do you think a single day of riding will suffice? I'm thinking of a 3 day trip. Ride down on a Friday, enjoy Saturday, ride back Sunday...

Thanks, and glad you had a great time..

Three days is iron butt. I doubt you'd enjoy that. Two there, two back is doable, but 3 each way lets you enjoy the sights and secondary roads when the interstate gets monotonous.

Go ride Colorado west to California... your opinions of the Gap and surrounding area may change. :D

You're the fourth rider I've run into since Saturday that has mentioned Colorado. I had one guy comment on my Ride Report when I asked him about it and he sent me this link:

I figure I can set aside four weeks for this in 2013... :D

Ditto. I lived near the NC border, Deals Gap was only a couple of hours away - that riding is nothing compared to the west. Colorado, California etc. are far superior to anything back east.

I call BS. I am here now and there is no way that anything else is "far superior". And you can do the Gap in a week.

I'm also wondering about the room availability. Plenty of it so I can just drop in?

In 2007 and again in 2010 I did the ride down to the Gap and back, and we easily found rooms MID WEEK. On the weekends there's usually more going on, so be sure to avoid days when there is a moonshine running truck rally at the Gap or the Corvette club of America or similar.

There are lots of places to stay.... If its an 'off' time, the best place is right at Deals gap motorcycle resort. Cheap, cool, everything you need.
I usually stay in Robbinsville. Also cheap. Phillips motel has single rooms, houses and a suite with 3 beds( a single, double and king), and a full kitchen.
I always trailer down and try for 3 full days of riding.
Dont miss the skyway... extra cool and extra fast.
And dont forget its a dry county, so byob.

Riding there and back in 3 days would SUCK! Damn near impossible to enjoy anything, I would think.

You are where now? Deals Gap or California/Colorado? I have ridden roads in the mountains in both western Canada and the U.S. that are way superior to NC.

I'm here in NC too. You might be right about the roads, but the fact is, it is easier to get here from the GTA than it is to get to Cali, Colorado, or western Canada. Would you say those roads out west are that much better to justify the additional trip time and costs?

Colorado is not that far. If you cannonball it with a friend you can get there in 24hrs. I mean, yes it isn't accessible in a simple day trip where you leave at like 7 am and get to Deals Gap by like 9pm. However, I also use to live in NC and (I have never met Revrandy btw :D ) and IMO that area of Tenn/NC has some awesome roads and is way better than riding in Ontario, but it doesn't compare to riding in the Western US.

Just for giggles I will put up my favorite areas for riding if I had to pick:
1 - New Zealand - I was in a car, but you can get a pretty good idea
2 - Colorado
3 - Southern France
4 - California

All of those are well in front of NC/Tenn area and I have been on a bike in all those places, except NZ.

The big pluses for Colorado are less popo, better weather, better visibility through corners, less traffic.... the scenery is in another league altogether.

Guys - not knocking your trip.... I'm sure I'd have a blast if I was there too. It is a fun place to ride and is a bit more accessible. However, going to Colorado isn't all that bad. I have done the drive there 3 times now.... and yes we trailer the bikes in order to have maximum riding time.

Was in Colorado/California 2 weeks ago on the bike and it was pretty amazing. Never been to the gap, hope to do it sometime this summer. I cant imagine anything in North America can stop Colorado/California both scenery and fun factor wise...

California riding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbsNqhhiRHI ...And this is only half of the way down the mountain...

Cool vid.
I'd love to check it out.
As for a comparison, the CN TN roads looks way better, in terms of condition.
I dont ever see cracks, raised reflectors , blue boxes or anything but beautiful tarmac.

The gap is fun for sure, but there are far better roads in the area with a 10/th of the
traffic and police

Ugh.... that rider was painful to watch. Doing the whole 1 handed corners..... just..... cause there is a camera.... ?.
