Bike is in storage. This catches my eye... How? The paint is coming off and the plastic is soft and sticky at the edge... What could cause this? Bike is a new 2013 sv650. I think when I got it from the dealer I noticed a bit of damage in that area (bit of paint scratched off, no big deal as its the inner part of the fairing) and some greasy material I wiped off but it looked fine otherwise.

Should I wash off the area with water or something and peel off the paint? Suggestions?

The only thing I can think of that can do damage on a paint like that is brake fluid.

Was the bike a crash recovery from insurance bike?

Is the actual plastic damaged? Brake fluid can strip paint sometimes like butter. Like Heylerds said. Maybe check for brake fluid leaks under pressure? If there's even the tiniest bit that drips down it will strip some paints.

I'd guess gas. My tank looked like that when it started to leak in the trailer. It was about 2 weeks before I discovered it.

The actual plastic is soft and sticky at the edge. I had to leave so I didn't have time to check the whole area. This part of the fairing goes under the engine, essentially where the kickstand is but on the right side of the bike. I have seen no signs of a leak occurring.

I think tonight I will try to wash the area with hot water and possibly some dish soap?.

To answer everyones question in one here.

New bike from the dealer, all parts are OEM from the dealer purchased in August 2013 with 1km on the odo. I do not think its heat from exhaust it looks chemical if anything. The plastic is soft and sticky, so I can say yes it is damaged but it snot missing, ie there are no cracks or chips just soft sticky plastic.

My best guess right now is this was direct from the dealer. Whoever was prepping may have inadvertently put something on there, dirty gloves or dirty hands after working with something that is very mean to ABS plastic. Needless to say not impressed if that's the case, though it sort of makes sense given that "greasy material" I mentioned that I wiped off a few days from the dealer.

Let the dealer fix it. Not only is the bike under warranty. They were the ones responsible for the pre delivery inspection and any required assembly. With only 1 km on the odometer , I seriously doubt they can put the responsibilty on you.

It has around 2k on it, I rode it. I'll call the dealer to let them know what happened, see if they can fix it though I dont expect much.

At least I can let them know so they're more careful next time.

You are a nice guy because I would cause a stink over there. What Dealer?

Was with Ready Honda Powersports. No complaints except for this. Sales guy was pretty cool too.
