My early stage HUD display

Pretty good attempt. But the level of distraction would drive me crazy and would be an accident in waiting. To me it doesn't matter whether it projected small or larger. it would be in my field if view all the time.

Sorry to be picky, but it's a HU Display, or a HUD. That is unless you're trying to sell it to the "Department of Redundancy Department". ;)

I love the idea!

Just looking at what the options are, based on comments:

Recon: its a ity bitty LCD that you look at, that is focused ahead of you . Might be idea, since it is unaffected by sunlight. Also, being Android, it is very expandable via apps.

ReVue: Appears to be dead.

Projected HUD: Probably the best idea, but the hard part is managing where the display will be when you crack the visor just a bit. It would be great to have GPS in there, but out of the main field of view.

No matter what, keep up the great work!

ps: considered buying a cheap knockoff Android phone, just to use the hardware to work and program with?

Must spell "Reevu" correctly, to find it: http://www.reevu.com/

I checked out a few eye LCD units, with resolutions ranging from 640x480 through 800x600, and damned near swallowed my gum when I saw the prices (in the thousands).

First time seeing this thread. Good job.
To the naysayers, i think your eyes will get adjusted after a while. You'll learn to ignore it after a while.

A good option would be to have it on/off on command

Excellent work - big fan of the DIY'er, and although it seems like you're competing with some larger companies & universities (and their budgets), you're well on your way to finding some niche idea or application - of which you must immediately apply for a patent!.. apply liek hell for those (even for small things that are relevant to this project), because you never know which company will need some or all of your ideas & work.

That GPS HUD for skiing/snowboarding is the most ridiculous application of this technology, IMO, and I think that company advertises it that way for the sake of liability... That tech would be MUCH more useful for motorsports; motorcycles, snowmobile's, jetskii's, etc.

Thats the beauty of it, the optics were designed for "near eye viewing" and the picture you see is similar to watching a 40 inch tv from about 10 feet away. Put another way there is nothing for your eyes to adjust too. Also the unit can be easily turned off and on via the controller pendent.

Another added bonus is connecting my iPhone 4s to the unit and running TomTom for tun by turn GPS. And finally adding a Scala G4 Bluetooth communicator to the setup allows full voice control of your smartphone all without ever removing your eyes from the road :)
