My bike wouldn't start (you will laugh)

So I wake up this morning all excited to see a sunny day and not a thundershower.
Get ready to head to work, got my gear on. The bike turns on, and it won't start ....

The HID's turn on, so it isn't the battery.
The FI light comes up and i can hear the fuel injection so that's not it...

Sigh ... So off i go, busted out the tools. Got the seat off.
Started examining the spark plugs. checking out the wiring, looking at all the gauges, oil level .. make sure nothing's leaking.

My dad walks out to the garage, he's got his coffee and paper looking all relaxed and goes "Hey kiddo, you sure your in neutral?"

.....

Yeah. Laugh it up :)
I know I had a good chuckle..

i remember one of my friends wanted to sit on my bike, so he revs it up, gets his jollies, turns it off and hands me the key...i go to leave about an hour later and can't turn the bike on...i never use the emergency shutoff, he did though...doh...

That's the way you're supposed to do it. Congrats now!

dont agree. I may use it once in a while, but I use the key - reason - that way I will TAKE the key from the ignition!!! Everytime I used to use the emergency shutoff I would always nearly forget my key

Hahahaha... nice! Tomorrow make sure you wake up early with your old man and have a coffee lol

I've done similar things before. I always get a laugh after!

depends, to each their own...it's an "emergency" shutoff, when i need it in an emergency, i'll use it...but wearing out a part using it for non emergency stuff and then when i do need it, i'll just leave it alone for now...

If you never use it, how will you know it'll work when you need it?

i use it sparingly...i didn't mean for it to be taken that i treat it like a nuclear missile switch...i just don't use it to be switching off my bike all the time...plus for some reason i seem to clip it while riding, that'll wake you up...

Shutting the bike off is the easy part of switch operation.

The most common problem with emergency shut-off switches occurs when electrical contact wear caused by repetitive use results in a switch either permanently or intermittently mimicking an "off" condition when in the "run" position, which is precisely what the emergency shut-off is required to do.

Unless you somehow manage to physically damage the switch's rocker and contact mechanism, it's virtually impossible to wear out the switch when it comes to turning the bike "off". The problems come when you go to move the switch back to "run".

I was always curious what would happen doing that while riding. Not an easy option to do on my GSA, but very easy to happen when I had my Jap bikes.

So what does happen? Similar to gear down to break, but on a more extreme level?

Depending on your speed and which gear, I assume you may lock up the rear tire...

On my carbureted R6, i used to turn the switch off while staying on the throttle....when i turned it back on i'd shoot a nice flame about a foot out the tail pipe with a ice backfire.....dunno if it was good for the bike but i enjoyed shooting carbon at the guy behind me now and then...just to make sure he's awake.

Nothing more extreme. On many EFI bikes, full closed throttle shuts off the fuel flow (mostly), so it pretty much feels the same.

thats hillarious

but do half the people say "use it or lose it" with the switch and the other half say "dont use it, or it will wear prematurely"?
where is the truth?

Kickstand
NNNNEUTRAL
Ignition
Fuel
Engine switch

lol

spells KNIFE i think

I use the key to shut off. Haven't done an intentional backfire in a long time.....might be good to use on that tailgater next time. :D

Leaving the kickstand down is also common. Also some bikes won't start if the clutch isn't pulled in - even if you are in neutral.

on that note, i have a stupid (on my part)story as well...

i was in a parking lot, waiting a for a few minutes to get the auto choke to finish doing what it was doing and when i felt she was all ready to go, i put her in first and pulled a bit....and stall...

i was like...wtf....ok...try again..

...and again...
...and again...

finally, i took off my helmet about to inspect and a guy walks up and says.."hey man, you know your kick stand is down, right?"

........

.

word....i'm a damn fool.

but i know what you mean about feeling like one :D

I went out one morning, all gear on, key in ignition, bike turned on, gas gauge went to a position at half tank. So i get on, pull in the clutch, start the bike and it fires up. I'm sitting on it adjusting my gloves and helmet as it warms. So i go to take off and as soon as i put it in gear, it stalls. WTF?? So i put it back in neutral, check my gas is on and intaking, give a few revs and it sounds great. click down to first and stall. I go to put the kickstand down to get off and check the bike out just to realize it was down the whole time.
Everyone has episodes like these every now and then no matter how long you've been riding. I've been riding since i was 8 and i still do stuff like this every blue moon.
