My bike was almost stolen

My bike was almost stolen an hour ago. The security guard was patrolling the underground parking heard some noise. Saw that my bike was moved, then this car took off. We have cameras in the underground, but I doubt it will show much. Bet they had covered or stolen plates.
They ripped the ignition off. Cops are on the way, but I doubt there will be anything they can do.
Any advice other than an alarm? The locks don't do much good, they just pick it up and throw it in a van.

I heard about a guy who was taking a clutch lever with him, leaving bike in gear.
They’ll still just pick it up and throw it in a van if they want it bad enough.

the only thing you can do is make it as difficult and inconvenient for them as possible, a couple of solid chains tied to concrete blocks, disc alarms, covers, parked inside a beater work van, parked behind a car etc etc etc

Am I right in thinking that this sounds like they were actually going to attempt to ride it out? That is a little unusual these days, more common for it to be just thrown in a van.

It's even harder to stop people messing with your bike than it is to stop them from stealing it. Pretty much the only way to do it is keep it in a secured space, like a personal garage.

Can I sell a bike that had the ignition damaged. I'm sick of this, I have $1000 deductible.
If the bike is worth $10,000 in great shape, what could I ask?
No damage anywhere else, tank, everything is fine.

That's ******, I'm sorry to hear about this. To walk away from the bike, I would expect that you would be in for a pretty steep loss, my guess would be a 20-30% discount to fair market value.

My suggestion would be to fix it out of pocket, doesn't look to be too much damage based on your pic. If you do it yourself, a trim piece, ignition cylinder, and patch up the cut wiring shouldn't put you more than $300 out of pocket. Only real concern I would have is if the ECU is blown from them shorting the wiring.

Has anyone dealt with BMW Toronto? I used their recommended towing service to get the bike there, I have called their motorcycle service dept many times in the last couple of days. No return calls, the adjuster wants photos and an estimate, but I am hearing nothing back from them. Did I take it to the wrong place?

Few of us in a BMW group do use them. General consensus is “meh”. I wouldn’t take my bike there.

Similar experience ‘meh’ maybe not the wrong place for you though. If it’s an insurance claim, I’d suspect they do it right.

Curious, are you trying to sell it, Won’t the ins. cover it? Maybe a high deductible?

Edit:

Red the 1K deductible, tough nut best to see what it costs to fix and re-evaluate. Personally I’d scrape the 1K together and then take bigpoppa’s advice.

These work if you are within a not too far radius. You'll be notified someone's messing with your bike via the pager while they try and figure out how to move it. It's very loud.

From what i understand, the better thieves ride them out after hot wiring them. You can work solo possibly and are less noticeable.
