My bike caught fire yesterday- stator gone! - what am i looking at $$

When mine caught fire it was minor flames as well. I didn't need water. I just turned the bike off and it went out. No damage to fairing or anything. I was scared tho, seeing fire from under your gas tank!!!!

I flew off that thing really fast.

How is this not covered by Suzuki, regardless of how old the bike is? This should be a major safety recall.

But it's a GSXR. I wonder how many people on here with GSXR's have had them burst into flames? It doesn't seem to be an extremely rare event. Maybe they should carry a warning label to prospective buyers.

Glad that you're ok OP. I've had issues with my V-Strom as well, but they are 2 year old clutch related.

suzukis quality seems to be going up, first frames cracking in half and now they just catch fire lol

Hey gsxrgrl, I spoke to you yesterday on the phone as Daniel explained I had the same issue. I will reiderate for everyones benefit.

GSXR rectifiers/Stators SUCK!

Suzuki does know this, they have since issued recalls on the rectifiers.

Talked to the Parts guy at Brampton Powersports and confirmed that the parts have since been redesigned and look slightly different that they originally did which is how you know that Suzuki is aware of this.

Unfortunetly the recall only goes as far back as 2008. Why would you recall a 6 year old part when you can blame it on regular wear and tear? The K6 and K7 models are out of luck.

Be prepared to spend big bucks. The stator is about $260 and the rectifier is $216 (approx). So add tax and 2-3hrs of labour and its around the $800-$900 mark.

Mine failed twice. I was lucky enough that the fist time it failed it was covered under an extended warranty which I got free when I bought the bike.

I had mine replaced again this season, and the part is different but has the same part number so people don't know that its been tweaked due to a known problem.

Good luck, the part is usually on back order too.

Man, Suzuki had the same R/R and stator issues in the late '70s. Some things never progress, I suppose.

You will def need a Regulator/rectifier..

Possible stator....

Only way to tell is my putting a multi volt meter on the yellow wires leading from stator.... (under the air box) .. You most likely will not do that.. So I say put on a regulator... If your battery stalls on u (after it's been charged up) and driven then u will need a stator..

My bike's r/r caught on fire just this saturday! I've gone through 3 rectifiers and a brand new stator within the past 4 weeks. I had enough of it and just bolted my rectifier inside my airbox so it stays cool all the time.

I think I'll do this too just to avoid a fire.

wow this is news to me, haven't had any issue with my 07 750 and I'm at 55,000km now... got me nervous though

I just finished the inspection. Luckily, just the regulator burnt. No damage to wiring and stator resistance checks out perfect. Gixxer owners, get this inspected. I probably do a dozen of these jobs a month.

Of course, back ordered from all major suppliers, the fun begins.

Was there not a recall on the starts on these?
I remember a couple years ago there was, not sure why bikes were involved but I'm pretty sure the GSKR was one of them.

08-10 according to the link posted

leaves those of us with older bikes screwed

Anyone interested in picking up the part for GXRGirl in Markham. I could have her back on the road this evening if I can find a rider to pick up the part?

Call the shop and let me know. 416 249 0422
