Muskoka day-ride route - suggestions?

Would you be willing to add more distance? I'd take 60 to 11 (or ravenscliffe 2) up to 518, then 518 across to tally-ho swords road.

I usually do this, but I usually do 632. I also avoid Southwood (I know it's twisty, but sand is prevalent).

Also, on the way up, take a detour on Cooper Falls Rd. It's scenic and a change of pace from the boring 11 ride.

Another also, I do this route for fall leaves. Great scenes and twisties. A great combination ride.

Southwood had maybe 3-4 corners last weekend that had sand. You could see it before you even got to the corner. It's no different then riding around town hazard on the road wise. I will second 632.

Thank you for the suggestions gents! I'd like to keep the route to as close to 500 km as possible, so we will have enough time to stop, rest, enjoy the trip and make it home before the sunset. I did take 7-632 route last year, but not sure if it will be realistic to add 7-632 up to Rosseau. It basically adds extra 40 clicks of twisties, and about 40 mins to the route. Something definitely to consider though.

Oh, Southwood has a sentimental value, just want to ride through a few spots on it. Will definitely be careful with all the sand and gravel in blind corners up there.

I usually dont ride Southwood because of sand and debris on the road, there are some very tight unexpected turns so stay awake!! If you can take more of hwy 35 north from Coboconk.

On you way back on the 118, just before you get into Bracebridge, head south on District Road 20, then south on Housey Rapids Road (distict road 6) then Coppers Falls Road, you will end up on HIghway 11 at Washago.

I'm staying in Midland this Friday and Saturday before joining up with Booya's Algonquin run on Sunday, so lots of good tips in here for me :-)
Thanks!

Here is a mpa with some possibilities:

http://tinyurl.com/9dfw5wr

-I find 400 boring and try and avoid as much as possible so the route up through Barrie gives a reasonable way around that is somewhat scenic.

-the part through Sparow lake isn't amazing, just avoids 11 a bit and gives another way to Southwood

-Mortimer's Rd (C on the map) is a nice side trip. SLower speeds but you can have soem fun there.

-I don't recall coutry rd 11 ("F" on the map) so take that with a grain of salt.

-I haven't been on Bobcaygeon Rd for a while but it was fun last time I was there. (It's the road that goes south to Minden)

-the road that heads Southwest from Minden is worth riding. Scenic and a bit entertaining.

-Monk Rd heading west from Norland isn't amazing, but is less boring than heading south and then on to 48. The part that goes over the Causeway as you near 48 is scenic.

-Beach Rd (23) is more fun than 48 and generally isn' backed up with traffic.

-The road through Zephyr is less travelled than 48 and somewhat more scenic

-There is construction at highway 48 and Herald Road. I liek going on Herald rd so you might take Mt Albert Rd West to Holt then south to Herald.

-I hate 400 and the stupid drivers on it so I would take Weston or Jane

Thanks a lot V-Tom! There are so many awesome possible places to ride up there, will definitely have to go more than once a year :). Regarding 400, we're planning to leave fairly early, so hopefully will escape the problematic drivers on 400 in the morning. But evening going home may be a problem, especially after several hours on the bike.

It seems like every other time I've taken the 400 I've ended up at a standstill because of an accident, regardless of the time of day. And its the worse highway ever for people just flying down the paved shoulder. I'd hate to be a rescrue crew on this highway.

Southwood is awful. There are bumps and ruts in just about every corner.

+1 I hate that road.
About 7 years ago when it was freshly paved it was amazing, but I think thy purposely leave it in the state it is now to keep 2 wheels going slow thru there.
Plus that road eats up more bikes then any other in Ontario I'm sure.

I usually take Weston up but it ends at Davis. You could always do Canal and figure out where to go after :P

Although the road at Canal is pretty messed up right now.

Not sure what you ride but you might like Awenda park road outside of Penetang..haven't been there for a couple of years but you can ride right thru the park and it should be pretty colourful about now...I used to ride up that way a lot..and always stopped at Dock Lunch on the Penetang waterfront as well.

Pic was taken a couple of years ago right in the middle of Awenda park. Hopefully I can make Booya's ride as well on Sunday...look for that blue Bimmer

I would suggest getting on 400 at hwy 9 ( Davis ) and get off at the next exit ( 88 Bradford ) go west till first light and turn north ( 5th sideroad ) and that will take you to Barrie but even better, turn at Innisfil beach Road east till 27 then north and pick up V-Toms Barrie bypass..that is a good way to get to Orillia without 400 or 11 from south of Barrie.

I ride a black FZ1 (its an older one - Gen1 style). Just watching the weather channel and the colours up north are peak - now if mother nature doesn't rain on our parade - all should be great. Actually found a $50.00 a night motel room in Midland! Good bet its not luxurious but it has fridge, microwave and coffee maker and will still be more comfortable than shivering in my tent - and I get to pee inside if I have to go during the night -)

Here's the way through:

http://goo.gl/maps/Fv5UU

From the north end of Weston rd turn left (west) on Davis
In 1.5 km turn right (north) on River Rd
Go straight (north) past Canal Rd. the road name changes to 5th side road.
You will come to a "Y" at 4th line. It has a yeild sign, go right (east)
In about .5 km you wil come to sideroad 5 (4th line dead ends) and you will turn left (north) You will be right beside hwy 400. (In rush hour traffic wave at the stopped cars!) You will come to a stop sign at Concession 5. Turn Left (West)
In about .5 km you will come to Sideroad 5. Turn Right (north) Follow this up to Barrie.

As always watch you speeds. I don't often see radar here but when you do you are a sitting diuck so take it easy and enjoy the ride.

Nothing challenging here, just a "feel good" road.

Great additions, try and fit this in. the 518 - tally-ho-swords - Ravenscliffe. I think better than Southwood.
Coopers falls Rd to Housey's Rapids Road then into/through Gravenhurst and back to your original route. This would bypass Southwood.

-I don't recall coutry rd 11 ("F" on the map) so take that with a grain of salt.
County Road 11 down the west side of Kushog Lake. Runs between Hwy's 35 & 118. Great road, challenging, watch out for the cottagers.

Rode my original (slightly modified) route today. County Road 11 was great! The only "problems" were that it was our first first time on that road, leafs were already on the road, and it was drizzling rain. The road is very hilly, and there is a turn after every hill. Enjoyed it for sure.

Regarding Southwood. It got repaved in a lot of places, and repaired in others. Funny thing is that the turn where I went down last year is COMPLETELY COVERED WITH GRAVEL. Brand new pavement, and both sides of the turn (especially southbound side) have gravel thrown from the sides all over fresh asphalt. Otherwise, it was all right.

Had late lunch in the town of Dorset - very cute restaurant (Zachary's), great views out of the windows and good tasty food.

Really wanted to add a 7-632 road up to Rosseau, but it started drizzling rain when we just turned onto 118 from 169, so decided to skip it. With some drizzling rain and several good stops, I left home at 7:30am and got home around 7:45pm. Could have come earlier, but there was a crazy traffic jam at 400/401. I think this was the ideal distance/time for me, so will plan the same distance/time route for my next ride up to Muskoka. Had 530 km on the odometer after everything was said and done.
