Moving Out questions

I live on my own, with a bike, cat, do my own shopping and go to school
It's in Peterborough, not Toronto, but I split a house and pay $450 a month.
Food I spend about $40 on groceries a week, sometimes more (fruit ain't cheap). I buy no name cat food so it's not too bad, it's just the start up costs of a carrier and litter box that cost the most.

holly **** girl thats it...

You don't post your home base and if you've never spent much time in downtown TO you will find it full of surprises, good and bad. Cheap good things if you know where to look and expensive bad ones if you don't. You have to grow into it or have a good guide / mentor.

Neat freak roomies are OK but not if they're anal about it. Adjust accordingly.

what the **** do you people eat?!

my grocery bill is about $40/week as well.. not the most elaborate diet but it gets the job done... i eat out probably 2-3 meals a week.

Sorry to hear that yours isn't considered a motor vehicle. Does it have pedals?

Drive: Operate and control the direction and speed of a motor vehicle.

To the OP - I don't see you being able to support yourself and save any money living downtown.
Maybe, you asking for a ride?

thanks for the responses and yes i just started thinking about this so excuse the stupid sounding questions

so from what im seeing its best to split with a bunch of room mates but i was reluctant to move in with others because im a bit of a neat freak

with that being said is it possible to rent houses in the downtown core or atleast something close to the gardiner/queensway for under 3200 a month (800 dollars x 4 ppl)

Check out the newspaper for apartment listings so you can get an idea of pricing...also don't forget about the winter and rainy days. You might still ride in those conditions or might not, if not then you will need to pay ttc to get where you need to go.

Also as mentioned, all the extra stuff that isn't listed that you will need. If you want to rent a movie, it costs money, need a new pillow? more money. Go out for lunch, extra on top of your normal grocery bill. Also have all the books, and school supplies that you will need and use through the year.

The average real meal-sized portion here's like 10 bucks (but it's getting very closes to 11). Even if I ate only at home, I'd be losing weight with $40 a week - that's nuts!

I think my parents spend $400 a month on me for food (and that's not including what I spend when I go out or don't have the time to pack a dinner).

1) anyone ride a motorcycle, live on their own, AND go to school?
2) im looking for an appartment downtown close to the gardiner and in between spadina and the DVP how much should i expect to pay for rent (1 bedroom apartment)
3) how much do you pay for food? i know this varies by person but i want to have a semi-healthy diet and ill be cooking for myself (i want to have balanced meals and not kraft dinner everyday)
4) how much does maintaining a cat cost?

i make around 600-900 bucks a cheque every other week (at minimum) will i be able to live comfortably (not like a rockstar but comfy enough so that im not stomped with bills)

Try again... maybe the parents will say yes to the cat if you ask nicely! ;)

What i ate yesterday:

Breakfast:
Poached egg w/ cheese and hot sauce on a slice of toast and a yogurt cup. ($1)
Morning snack: Mixed veggie bowl of cucumber, carrots and half a red/yellow/orange pepper ($1)
Lunch: Tuna sandwich (with fixins) and a banana. ($2)
Dinner: BBQ chicken breast and a salad or veggies. ($3)

Thats a normal day for me and i'll spend about $7 on food.

I've started paying more attention to the grocery store flyers. Load up on chicken and freeze it when it's on sale. Go to whatever grocery store has yogurt or cheese on sale. I know groceries will be a bit more in Toronto but they wouldn't be double what I'm paying now.

Op hope you dont like beer like i do..stay home save up enjoy your bike and money right now...

sure you could probably afford to move out, but why?
so you can live with 3 other people (that you dont know)
do laundry at a coin shop
buy the least amount of food possible to survive?
count the number of times you fill up your gas?
so you can choose.....do i go out tonight? or save to buy my food for the week.
the term we can use loosely is "house broke"

budgets are one thing.
but if you have to go through all that just to be able to live on your own, then you aren't ready financially.

we havent even talked about ....
insurance/other bills/other debt/ect.
live is expensive.
sometimes moving out, inst always the grown up decision.

hmm looks like i cant afford the downtown core i checked kijiji for prices and theyre in the 1400s which is wayy past my budget as a student

to be honest im looking to only spend around 600-800 a month on rent how far west would i have to move? my goal is to be close to the gardiner because it connects to both my work and school

if youre a student can you post your rent and where youre located so i can get a good comparison (if you split with someone else thats cool also)

I probably eat more than this for breakfast alone lol But yeah, admittedly I usually hit up Metro on like a sunday night (LATE) and I'm sure I could get my food cheaper if I shopped around more and looked at deals more but I just can't be bothered, so yeah, I'm paying a bit more for my laziness/convenience. I still hit up the bucher shop from time to time and buy chicken in bulk though and even than.....gets expensive. Typical grocery bill for me lately is around $120 and that's for one week only AND I'm currently on a diet! lol

You don't count, each one of your arms is the size of a person.

Sadly, no. Not even close.

living on your own sucks down on the $$$ hardcore....Moving in with your g/f and sharing the costs helps a lot.

For 800 bucks we were renting a one bedroom basement apt close to Dixon and Royal York, it was tiny but the landlords were really cool and we had 2 car parking + they gave us the shed to store our bikes...

good luck find that...

food, hardly eating out, normal diets we were spending somewhere between 300 and 400 on food for the two of us. Dont think u can half that if u're thinking of feeding one person....more like 75% of the cost.

IMO $900 every two weeks wont get u didly....that would mean half your monthly income goes towards paying the rent alone....
