I think this was an email destined for your mom but it arrived on a motorcycle message board by mistake.

Check kijiji for apartment rental prices. Youre going to pay a small fortune downtown

You might be shocked at apt prices downtown. I just moved here in December and when I was looking, decent one bedrooms downtown were anywhere from 900/month to 1400/month. You might be better off looking for bachelor apt's even still decent ones are still pricey considering the size. They get cheaper the further north you go form the core but still pricey. I ended up finding a sweet deal on a condo rental and went that route. I definitely pay but relatively speaking, it's a great value. I pay the same as I would for an apt but I get all the condo amenities and perks. Check kijiji there's always people looking to rent out their condos and you can usually bargain with them.

I cook for myself everyday (real food) and while I don't keep track I can guarantee it's cheaper than eating out everyday. But you'll find that everything is that much more expensive downtown, groceries and take out food included.

I actually have two cats and I'd say they're pretty cheap to maintain...maybe 50/month . Go to costco and buy litter and food in bulk, you'll save yourself a ton of money.

IMO With that budget your going to be cutting it close if you want to live comfortably in the downtown area.

EDIT: Add 100 a month for a parking spot for your bike ;)

2. 1100
3. 50/wk
4. 100 humane society fee, 500 for spay/neuter, 350/yr for food. 50-100/yr for vet bills, 20/month for litter,

1200-1800/month will be very tight to live on your own in toronto.

You can get rent down to 500 a month if you're willing to have roommates. Otherwise, the lowest that you'll find for a cramped, single apartment that's relatively clean is probably in the 700 range.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider it with a minimum income of 1200-1800 a month. But that's because I like to live where I can spend money without worrying about it. I tell all my friends in Uni to stay home unless they absolutely need to leave (but I can understand that sometimes sanity/freedom from a retarded family is a high, but necessary price to pay).

Other than that, we can't answer much for you. Those are all subjective questions that depend on the lifestyle that YOU want to live. What do YOU define as comfortable? How good are you at budgeting? What kind of meals are you trying to cook for yourself? Life as a student's expensive, especially if you factor in the social parts of it like going out (even if it's every now and then). The biggest thing that people forget to factor in is the "in-case-**** happens money". Sometimes crap that you have breaks down, needs to be replaced, gets stolen, etc. and when you stretch your budget to just enough before it, you're asking for a lot of stress when the smallest thing goes wrong.

It sounds like you're still at the very first steps of thinking about this. Or if you've been thinking about it for a while, you haven't been going about it right. Tally your expenses up for the next month and try to spend as normally as you would. Then generously calculate your yearly expenses and decide whether having x amount of money left over is worth moving out for.

If you can, stay at home and commute.

No shame in living off the parents as a student.

you're going to need to either sell dope or sell your a55 to make ends meet. If it were me I'd go with the narcotics.......but thats just me
good luck

2) bachelor to one bedroom range is about 700 to infinity, 700 is pretty crummy.

3) I spend 500 - 600 a month on food. You might get away with 400 a month. I like my steaks.

4) eat the cat.

I think you're forgetting a lot of costs:

- Interwebz
- cat food/vet bills
- commuting (gas, maintenance, insurance etc...)
- TV
- other costs (**** will popup that you won't be able to think about now, but make you pull your hair out)

You should have 1-2k spare for emergencies.

With that income you're going to be living off cup noodle...

I live on my own, with a bike, cat, do my own shopping and go to school
It's in Peterborough, not Toronto, but I split a house and pay $450 a month.
Food I spend about $40 on groceries a week, sometimes more (fruit ain't cheap). I buy no name cat food so it's not too bad, it's just the start up costs of a carrier and litter box that cost the most.

1. sorry I ride a motorcycle

Sorry to hear that yours isn't considered a motor vehicle. Does it have pedals?

Drive: Operate and control the direction and speed of a motor vehicle.

To the OP - I don't see you being able to support yourself and save any money living downtown.

thanks for the responses and yes i just started thinking about this so excuse the stupid sounding questions

so from what im seeing its best to split with a bunch of room mates but i was reluctant to move in with others because im a bit of a neat freak

with that being said is it possible to rent houses in the downtown core or atleast something close to the gardiner/queensway for under 3200 a month (800 dollars x 4 ppl)

Prepare your anus, I couldn't live "comfortably" on my own making twice what you make.....

You're looking at 1200+ for rent for anything decent. You can probably find cheaper but it probably won't be pretty.

Food? I spend about $500+/month on groceries but I eat like a horse. Back in Uni I got by eating about $70/week but I was eating as cheap as possible and that was like 6-7 years ago.
