Moving From Vancouver

Hello Forum!
I'm moving from Vancouver to Toronto and was wondering if there is anything I should know about the motorcycle laws here. Maybe some other people who have made the same move can point out some differences I should be aware of. First thing I notice is that there are bikes parked on sidewalks here. In BC these would be ticketed but here it seems to be ok? Any other things I should know about? I appreciate any advice you can give me!

Thanks,
Nick

You can still get ticketed if you part your bike on the sidewalk here in Toronto. You can park your bike anywhere where there is a Green P MACHINE, you dont get free parking in a Green P parking LOT. Regardless if your parking for free or not you still need to adhere to the road signs. e.g. no Parking from 6Am-9AM or Parking Limit 3 Hours, etc. Also when parking, try to park at a 45 degree angle instead of parallel or perpendicular to the curb.

Your insurance is going to double. But that will probably be offset by your housing cost decrease.. :-) You can't ride in HOV lanes on 400 series highways..

Why are you moving to Toronto?

I know a lot people from Toronto move to BC.
Just got back from vacation in BC, it's wonderful...the weather let's you ride motorcycle almost all year round.

Yah, and the $1 mil 500 sq. ft. condos are awesome too..not to mention the zero job market.. :-) But go for it!

Apart from why you'd move east in the first place...

You'll quickly learn drivers here don't give a **** about anything or anyone but themselves. Laws do not apply to german vehicles, minivans/suvs, or taxis. They get a special card exempting them from signalling or stopping for anything.

Also, "All way stop" is a "4 way stop". Funny story about my mother finding that out the hard way.

Vancouver drivers = dangerous aggressive, ie predictable
Toronto drivers = dangerous stupid, ie unpredictable

don't stop at stop signs it will induce road rage and you'll get a honking too rather roll through it. Ah I miss Toronto. Also yellow means go. And watch out for cabbies and bicycles.

But doing all the above may also net you a ticket too so it's a balancing act of do I risk getting run over by a road rage driver or suck up the ticket.

Why?...it's freakin Toronto ....easily find somewhere better.

First of all.... Why the **** would you want to move to Toronto from Vancouver?

Second:
-Your insurance will go up exponentially
-The riding roads will suck compared to BC
-Your bike will get stolen if you live in a Condo, so get theft coverage
-If you plan on buying used over here, prepare to sift through a million "BUY MY 6 YEAR OLD SPORT BIKE - $9500 FIRM" ads

Hey guys thanks for all the replies! As you may have guessed I'm moving to the city for work. Its actually a move back to this city since i'm from here originally. Sure I'll miss the biking in Vancouver...I'll miss the mountains and ocean and Washington/Oregon/California just down the road. But the thing is, and maybe you never know this until you move to Vancouver from Toronto, is that Toronto wins hands down. So I'm happy to be back.

Is my bike really going to get stolen from a condo? Its a vstrom. Do people actually steal these? I've never heard of such a thing

I lived in edmonton for a while and rode to victoria once, was really surprised by how courteous drivers were to motorcyclists through most of BC. Definitely not like that in ontario, here you have to dodge traffic, sometimes people will even try to run you off the road. I wouldn't make that move unless i had to!

I too was born in Toronto. Moved to Vancouver in 1991. Had brief moments of insanity and considered moving back. Just
dont think i could take the weather extremes there. Hate the high humidity summers with humidex of 50C and the winters of
tons of snow and -40C temps.

But agree housing out here is nuts. check out this to see what 1.4million will get you

do not move here! You have been warned

Traffic enforcement (i.e. speeding) is far more heavily enforced in Ontario than anywhere else in Canada, from my subjective observation. I've ridden coast to coast. The only place I see coppers every few minutes is Ontario. I rode around Vancouver for a week and saw maybe two coppers. I see that many in five minutes in Toronto, typically.
