Movers - Recommendations

Hey Gang,

Moving day is Nov 30 and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a reliable moving company.
The move is from Georgetown to Erin Ontario.
The original company we had hoped for is booked solid, so while we're looking for another option I'd figure I'd ask.

Not interested in renting a truck and doing it myself, not interested in getting some friends to do it.
I want a insured reliable, professional company to handle this, as I'll have other things to attend to.

So if you had a recent and good experience, please pass along a name and phone number / email.

Thanks!

We used a guy used before (GTA to Barrie) that was recommended by our RE agent. Rob at 647-223-3184. It looks like the company is Truman Moving Solutions (he is Rob Truman). No WSIB clearance under that name but that could be o/a name. This was about five years ago. He showed up in a rented truck with a helper (we had asked for him plus one so that's good). Moved everything with no damage or games. Looks like he may be a RE agent now. Not sure if he is still doing moves. I wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

Thanks, I'll reach out.

I'm sure you've heard of the scams. Low price and then surcharges tripling the prices. Goods held hostage until fees are paid etc.

Hopefully the big name companies are open on pricing.

Friends moved far with Allied or Schneider or one of the big guys. It was all the crap you expect. Bid low, invoice high. Move was based on weight and based on the scale tickets on the invoice, their stuff got thousands of pounds heavier between pickup and dropoff. Multiple clients on the truck so it is supposed to be weighed as each client is added or removed. It's more profitable if you invoice everyone on the truck for the entire truck load. Lots of stuff missing.

My late brother rented and packed a container for his move to Panama. Not what the Jampy00 had in mind.

On that note, I had a mover and a cube. It cost more but I found it very helpful. Cube was dropped in the driveway two weeks before move. It got lots of the small and/or awkward stuff (lawnmowers, tool boxes, yard tools, summer tires, most of the garage, etc). The old house was small and had little room for staging items ready to move. Durable goods in finished boxes went into the cube (kitchen, etc). Movers moved furniture and boxes of clothes/etc. I had two weeks to unload cube at the new house. That worked out far better than movers dumping everything into the house/garage in one day. If you have too much junk to be put away, it's hard to work around the piles or setup shelving or whatever you need to organize it.

I'll file that for future reference. The last time we moved it was before the staging trend. We actually lived in the house until the inevitable closing day when a half dozen properties had to change hands, one at a time. Hurry up and wait.

On that note it is understandable that if the movers have to wait for the keys to the new place the hours are chargeable.

On the staging front, we had a 10x10 storage unit with everything the RE agents wanted out prior to listing. Most of that stuff went in the cube too.

We did a bridge loan for a little over a week. Eased the stress of moving day. Cost a couple hundred. Let us get internet setup and snow cleared out of driveway ahead of moving day (and clean if required before refilling house but previous owners left it in decent shape).

Yes, I have seen the horror stories. Our goods are moving from one location to the other (no hold over)
Also, F them if they want to keep my Ikea furniture have at it.. I'm taking all the valuable items.
85% of our junk is already in storage, our house is actually pretty empty right now.

What I typically look for:
What is the hourly rate + Truck fee
When do they start the billing time (should be at my home, not their yard)
Any discount for cash
Do they have all the correct insurance etc.
Everything in writing

We thought of this, but since we pretty much cleared out the house we hope it is not required. But mind you still have the lawyers to deal with etc..

My lawyer strongly preferred for me to be homeless for a week instead of owning two for a week as it is safer. That was too much a hassle for me. That gets you into furniture stored, hotels, etc. Not having everything happen on one day was nice and we obviously had keys for whenever truck got to new house as often keys aren't transferred until late in the day.

Yes, I am referring to the Keys etc. When I set up my move it will be late in the day, F the person that bought my house they were a pain in the ass and they can wait a few extra minutes..

Cash under the table could leave you liable if some loser throws his back out. The moving company and their WSIB aren't involved. A few percent to offset credit card fees is OK as long as there is a paper trail.

Am I too paranoid???

Another suggestion from a member was to make it part invoiced and part cash.

Although it was many years ago, I used Two Men and a Truck. I recall it being a reasonable price. I was impressed with them to say the least. The friends I was expecting to help get everything ready for the movers didnt show. The movers showed up with two trucks and four guys. I apologized for not being ready for them and it didnt seem to bother any of them. They got to work and got it packed in the trucks.

On arrival at the new house they started to unload. Again, my 'friends' failed to show. They asked where I wanted things as it came off the truck (basically, which room does this bedroom set go in, etc). I was tired and ****** at my friends and I guess it showed. When one guy asked where I wanted a particular thing I answered 'master bedroom'. He looked at me, smiled and said 'you want the microwave stand in the bedroom?' At that point I just told them to use their own judgement, they took it all out they knew where it should probably go back. And they did !!

Some friends had a terrible with two men and a truck. Extortion, stolen items, etc. One was considering calling the police as the comments being made by the movers were approaching the level of sexual assault. The worst. Calling the company got them nowhere.

Is Two men and a truck a franchise? Some good and some bad?

Jammpy , in your area , I use Scannell moving ( atlas I think) in Milton . The do G’town and go anywhere . Service as promised, on price . I had 6,000 lbs of cast iron machines in the basement , a 1000 lb pizza oven. A 300 yr old grandfather clock and 15 paintings worth 1000 + . It all moved perfectly .

You may want to discuss potential repercussions with your RE lawyer. When my brother moved out of his last place, he was charged thousands for not vacating the property by the agreed time, even though he was out that day. BS like having to pay for a hotel, food, and other expenses which obviously didn't add up. And all he was doing was vacuuming the place for them.
