Hi all,

Looking to purchase a set of tires for my dad's bike. He rides a 2016 Harley Sportster 48 and the OEM tires are the Michelin Scorcher 31. He was quoted over $1100 at the dealership and I want to see what are the best options/tire shops to buy motorcycle tires as that seems overpriced.

Front tire size: 130/90B16 73H
Rear tire size: 150/80B16

We're located in the GTA (Scarborough) and I don't want him to get scammed. I am not a rider personally and want to gift him as he says the tires are due for a change from tire wear. I am thinking of Cycleworld and saw some online retailers but not sure about reputation and what shops will install tires without purchasing from them.

I’ve ordered many sets of tires from Pete’s as well. Last set in early April.
Had them installed by Daniel at (416) 707-0422 call or text and email is heritageautosports@gmail.com
I am sure others will chime in with other recommendations

I have also found revco.ca to have good prices
 
Pete's has these tires for $480 + shipping + tax, about $575 in round numbers.

Mikeymoto, in Brampton, will do a ride in tire change for $80. This would mean $655 all in with Pete's tires. You may have a similar install option somewhere in Scarborough.
 
80$ for (two) ride in tire changes! nice..

expensive original tires?! Im wondering if there are better (or less expensive) tire options available..

HD dealership pricing for tires are just expensive, even more with COVID price gouging. They also have exclusive relationships with manufactures so you can't usually get the exact tire elsewhere. I switched to Michelin Commanders II and have been very satisfied. Mind you I ride a touring model. But alternatives can be found. Just bounce around on some HD forums and see what other riders are running to see what works.
I bought my tires from GP bikes, had them do the install as well. I just brought my wheels in.

BTW I'm in Scarborough as well. Cycleworld is ok. Old school kinda shop. But I got the impression they were pulling part pricing out of hat then legit market pricing. Clothing and Gear pricing over there is ok, as it's all tagged. Call GP Bikes it's no BS, and they will match pricing if you tell them you found a better prices someplace.

Really, a travelling tire change vehicle? Have you used them, would you recommend them?

They meant you can ride there, and Mikeymoto will remove the wheels for you & change your tires. That is about what I paid for my last tire change where I brought the wheels in myself. Nobody is doing mobile tire service except for track days

Yes, this is what I meant. $20 / each for carry in wheels and $40 / each wheel for ride in to his shop.

IMO, an incremental $40 in total for someone to pull 2 wheels is an incredible deal.

In all cases you need to contact him in advance for an appointment.

Just an update:
Mikeymoto does not service Harley Davidsons when I reached out to him and Daniel from HeritageAutoSports charges $85/hr and estimated 2.5hrs to install the tires onto the bike.

I am most likely buying the tires from GPBikes as they were able to price match Pete's but the cost to install the tires with their service department is $125/tire onto the bike.

I am still debating on where I should get the tires installed as it seems to be very expensive when it needs to be installed onto bike versus onto rim only.

If there are any other suggestions on where to install the tires that'd be amazing!

Harleys are a PITA - you often have to remove part of the exhaust to pull the rear wheel.
You also need a VERY STURDY way to support the bike with the wheels off.
Unless you're very confident, let a shop do it.

For sure. I used to run OEM Bridgestone Exedras and now it close to $400 for a set. I went with Dunlops at $280 for the set. Cost before taxes and $35 delivery. Way up in the last 3 years.

GPR-300 I'm assuming? If so that's actually a fairly decent tire for the cost. Don't know of many other Dunlops available for that price.

Just checked the invoice they were $256 for the set plus tax and shipping. From Pete’s. I would sooner use him than a big company even if he ends up being a few bucks higher. But his prices are usually lower.

In your Dad's case, would it be worth going with tires that have a harder compound to last longer?

I was spoiled when I road my Wing over 20K between tire and brake pad changes.

Last summer I was noting that the 2 yr old tire set on my Bandit was worn to being unsafe. I only tour with the bike and tallied about 8K with the two years on them. I ordered a new set but with a harder compound and haven't noticed any differences from the early softer versions both in rain and on cold roads. I was told to expect a minimum12K on the new ones which will place me into 2025.

Wow, $20 per wheel carried in! I just paid $60 per wheel carried in at the shop I used in Caledon. Oh well, I'll make note of Mikeymoto for future use.

I definitely recommend Pete's for tires. I ordered a pair of tires from him in late April and they were delivered within two days. Great service and prices.
