Spring is here, beautiful riding weather, many of us taking out our bikes in the good weather. Smile on our faces, blissful, happy.

And then they strike. Yes, someone attempted to move my motorcycle parked on a side street. Thank goodness for my disc-lock and alarm. Middle of the day.

Toronto.

I try to follow the law. Park on the road with other cars. But away from heavy traffic to avoid fender benders. This is the result. How many times has my bike nearly been damaged or stolen because I am trying to avoid a parking ticket. Scooters can park on the sidewalks but motorcycles can't? That's the problem. Puts our bikes in a very vulnerable position against theft and damage.

So what happened? The alarm went off? Or you just noticed that the bike has been moved after you came back?

Which part of the city was it in?
 
For sure he won't talk to the police..then he'll hire Redline Legal services and he'll be acquitted. FTP!!! :lol:

I'm just being a dick.. :lol: Everyone here is always trying to weasel out of parking tickets and speeding tickets and accident claims..I was just saying this guy is going to do the same thing and we're all going to trash him even though he's just doing what we do! :lol:

Where did the incident happen? Were you possibily parked at a 45 degree angle to the sidewalk? Could it be that a car was trying to park / leave and the driver tried movng the bike in order not to hit it?

Just wondering. :confused:
 
In the end...this is a great reminder to keep things locked up...

I know in the excitement of spring, we're too busy enjoying the ride and forget!
 
on this topic... how many of you guys use locks and what kind do you use/recommend?


i myself dont have a disc lock, but seeing as though i'll be riding and parking in toronto this year i am thinking of getting one.

I used a disc lock, but mostly to stop people from messing around with it. I think if they want your bike, they'll get it..short of serious chaining-to-the-ground stuff.
 
Disk lock is useless.
They pick up the bike and load it into a truck.
Park by other bikes and lock you bike to a tree.
They'll still steal it, but they'll leave yours till last.
 
I hate to say it, but this is exactly why I have theft coverage with a relatively low deductible just so I don't have to worry about theft

if my bike gets stolen it's not the end of the world and I don't treat it as such

as do i. but still, i'd like to put down a few preventative measures, just to keep myself from going shopping sooner than i plan on.

I'm getting two disc locks. One for the front and one for the rear. The disc lock is a deterrent more than a real lock. If your bike is locked and the next one isn't they will pass on yours for the easier one. I'm considering getting a chain or cable lock to lock the bike to a tree or post but my bike is old enough that it really isn't necessary.

One of the locks is a Xena lock with alarm. The alarm serves not only to deter basic thieves it also goes off if someone plays with the bike (ie sitting on it), or if you forget to remove it before riding. The second lock is a basic Masterlock disc lock. Both small and easy to carry around.

If they want my bike they are gonna need to lift it right off the ground and for a 95 ZX6C I doubt anyone will bother.
 
don't really bother with a lock on the front rotor. they can just put a skateboard under the front wheel to roll it around.

Put the lock on the rear wheel. The back of the bike is ALOT harder to pick up (more weight, less leverage)
 
from what i remember last time i handled a xena lock, it would be hard to pick the bike up without triggering the alarm. its pretty sensitive and having two i think would work great in a public spot.

one thing i dont like about parking at a 45 degree angle is that the bike is perfectly lined up to run it inside a van. if the bike is parallel with the curb, the thieves would have to turn the bike around first as this would increase slightly the amount of time it would take them to steal a bike. seconds count, and the longer it takes to steal the more chance of making a mistake or someone noticing.

When I bought my project/spare parts bike the guy's son lifted the front wheel on to the back of my truck and then lifted the back end on like it was no more effort than when i'm lifting a cinder block... bike is 500 pounds. took longer to strap the bike down than to get it in the back of the truck.
