Motorcycle Skills: What are your 2022 goals?

give us some reference here - What's your current best time? what's the track record?
current best was 2:17, record is 2:00

The really big question is, trackday or race? One is definitely worth bragging about.

U turns. I don't know if I can't balance myself when doing a sharp right turn or it's the way my throttle had is located or what but I'm not as steady for whatever reason.
I definitely find it more challenging to do right U turns with the throttle on that side. My throttle also is twitchy at the low rpms, which adds to issue. When I used to have the Pro-Taper ATV bars on my bike, I found that doing full lock turn was easier. With the stock bars on now, I can't do it as consistently (but I also don't practice enough). Not sure how much you practice doing them, but I know that when I used to practice them several times a season, I could do them with much greater smoothness and closer to full lock consistently.

I try to ensure my head is cranked in whatever direction I'm turning and I'm looking directly through the centreline of the arc (almost behind me at my exit), and body weighted to the outside peg. If I'm doing the right side U turns, then I have to hike my body a little further up to give my arm some room to have better control of my throttle.

You can do a slide turn to the right, but you either gotta be quick with that right foot to put it down after you stop braking, or you gotta do that turn with the feet on the pegs and transition from brake to throttle immediately without stopping. Timing is key because if you lift off the rear brake before you come to a complete stop... Hello Highside...

This is where I am with the skid turns (albeit to the left). Working on getting the transition down more quickly and doing the turn while standing on the pegs:

Nicely done!
Steering in the direction of the skid is always a hard thing for me on the bike.

Trackday.
I dont think a 2:17 or a 2:15 is anything to brag about In either scenario, but im curious why you think one is more brag worthy than the other?

At a trackday, you can put yourself in a position to turn a hot lap with no traffic. And it's just your numbers from your timer.
In a race, you are in traffic and on thier timers.
Totally different scenario.

In my experience it's harder to go fast on a trackday than in a race, something about the starting grind and knowing there's a flag at the end makes you push a little harder and gives a little more motivation that is not there on a track day.

Setting goals is good.

My goal at my age is continue to race at GB and maybe fit Shubie in, still go for street rides, still find time to ride the trails and get out on the ice at least 2x.

Ya....skill development? I could definitely develop to be better but I think I will just blindly stick to the experience goals.

@Saitou^.~ IMO I think Racer5 is the best bang, I signed up for their June L1-3 course - so we shall see. And thanks to your posts here I def be at Toni's school :) Cheers

Thatta boy Alex, track is crack bro :)
Come hang around for a race weekend this season.

haha Jay, you notice it! I've been jealous of you boys riding track for so many years now, it's finally time to do some myself I hope. But my heart now split between riding dirt and hopping to drag a knee on the track, will see what I can do next year :)

Playing in the dirt is definitely a lot cheaper. Hurts less when you fall off the bike as well...

DAMHIK.

Riding is a perishable skill. Keeping it up while adding a few more skills would be nice. Defensive road riding is topping my list. Some track day skills would be welcomed. Alleviating my fear of wheelies is always up there given that I'm a lot more mature now at 63 than when I was at 59.

First goal is to get better at jumping snowmobile at speed. No issues at ditch jumping speeds but anything faster I tend to have the nose too high.

When the snow melts I’m going to work on the slow speed dirt bike stuff. Pivot turns, log piles, etc. I’ve cleared the woods out around my house last week to make room for a course and have logs ready to assemble obstacles.

I found equal enjoyment in track days and dirt riding. I gave up track after about 8yrs to get back into the dirt and don’t regret it but kept my track gear in anticipation of doing a day once in a while. Already was considering doing a track day next year on the XR.

Thanks for the reminder - I've been wanting to do this for a few years and am about to sign up for the Racer5 course in June as well. At least one of my friends also wants to join in and maybe a couple more. Looking forward to it:)

N3WMAN and I are teaching Racer5 next season, so feel free to say hi of we're not your instructors.

My goals are to hopefully earn my black numbers at SOAR, but it will tough. Won't be too shocked if it doesn't happen, so a podium finish in the dry would be the next best thing.

Even if the year ends with me only improving my lap times I'll be happy. I will be on a "newer" bike next season, so hopefully the transition goes well and I don't start below last years pace. But I'm keeping my '05 for now just in case :p
