Motorcycle Skills: What are your 2022 goals?

Definitely need to work on my sand riding. As Ganny is almost my neighborhood and it’s a sand box.
When riding sand I try to do these two things. *** back on the seat and get on the gas. You want to lighten the front end and get get some speed to help with steering.

Thanks! I got buried in sand on my first ever outing at Simcoe County and shied away from it from then on.

Then took another trail and got turned around by ATVs that said it’s muddy as **** and I won’t make it through on my 80/20 tires. Strike two.

Never entered the forest again.
A bunch of us partook of an ODSC dualsport ride down around Walsingham (real sandy country) and we were all on the klrs. Dropped it a few times that day and I far from the only one.

I trail ride a lot and always try to work on technique, body positioning etc. This year I want to get a little more into the slow speed technical kind of riding.

Scorra opened two trail loops near Orillia late this season that are supposed geared towards that style.

If I come across a decent deal on a trials bike at the right time I’ll pick it up to play around in the yard with.

Is there a benefit to having different gear than street gear when going off-road? Or is it just marketing?

Helmet?
Chest protector?
Padding?
Boots?

Trail riding either a dirt bike or adv bike I go with
- Alpinestars bionic chest protector
- Knee/Shin guards
- MX boots
- Vented MX gear

You can add elbow pads and a neck brace if you like. Elbow pads tend to give me arm pump and the neck brace gets in my way while trail riding but I do wear one when I ride MX. Knee braces can be a good idea instead of knee pads as well, personal preference.

BTW I think I offered to meet you at the Scorra trails last summer. Invitation stands if you want to venture in again. I can give you some tips for the sand etc and you might feel a little more comfortable if someone is there to help pick the bike up.

Thanks! And yes you did! But timing, kids and life get in the way!

I expect with 3 kids next summer to be even more crazy busy...but I'm not selling the bike this time around. Maybe trading for a dedicated dirt bike with time.

+1

MX helmets flow a lot more air than street helmets. Nice when you're working hard in the dirt, and not going very fast.

Chest protectors are a bit of a misnomer. Most dirt riders wear roost guards that deflect debris off their chest. Those don't provide much blunt-force impact and because they're so loose, could actually fly up and hit you in the chin. A real chest protector would be like the A* Bionic that @blackcamaro mentioned above.

MX boots are a lot more stiffer and protective than street because your lower extremities are more at risk when you're riding dirt. The caveat here is to get the appropriate level of boots that provide good protection *AND* good feel. My first pair of boots were full-on MX boots with a steel shank in the sole. No flex, which is good for protection, but provided no feel for the brake pedal. I got a pair of Forma Adventures just for doing light trails. Save the MX boots for single track and gnarly-type rides.

I prefer the pads that strap on to the elbows vs the full mesh jackets with the pads sewn in. I tend to overheat with those on, but YMMV. If you're a cool cat when you ride, then you may be okay with the mesh jacket.

I want to ride on a track. Never done that! And there, I want to improve on braking and trailing off through corners over, and over again. Practicing in a controlled environment is what I am looking towards. It gets impractical on public roads.

Not to mention unsafe and expensive if you get ticketed.

Are there any restrictions on the kind of bike you can/cannot take on a track? Like would one need to specially rent a sport bike?

I don't think so. As long as you abide by whatever rules the organizers have for the setup of the bike. Most want no coolant, and a belly-pan to catch liquids, some want your mirrors off, all the lights taped up, and a few want all the bolts and bits safety-wired.
