Motorcycle Safety Course Questions.

So... I was considering taking the course to get my M2. I went to a lot of their websites and they all seem to require a lot of gear which I don't have, like boots and gloves.

What's going to happen if I show up without boots or gloves? Are they going to sent me home?

Unfortunately, yes....they wont allow you to ride without the minimum gear. DOT approved helmet, jacket, gloves and boots. However, these things are easy to find and cheap options are available. They allow gloves that you can buy at Crappy Tire for like under $10...they are those work gloves, not sure what they are called. Boots, they accept anything that covers ankles and is not a sneaker....so Timberlands or any of those boots are fine. Jacket, anything leather/textile riding. Helmet is where you may need to spend or just go to Parker Bros. and they'll rent you one for $25 for the weekend.

Not sure if all places are the same, but gloves helmet jacket and boots were a must when I got mine. the boots could even be work boots as long as they cover the anckle.

Besides... why would you not want to have these things anyways.... have you ever seen how they treat road rash?

Course or no course...you are missing the very basic requirements for safety. Proper gear is an investment you make on yourself and your life. Please get proper gear right away. My friend, you are taking big risk just to save a few dollars.
Regarding your question, without proper gear you will not be allowed to take the course.

No gear, no chance of riding. Simple as that. You'll probably lose your money and get sent home.

But the gear doesn't have to be motorcycle specific, any sturdy leather boots that cover the ankle and work gloves with leather palms that cover the wrist bone should suffice. But the best thing to do would be to contact the registration and ask them for more gear-specific questions.

I have a textile Joe Rocket coat you could have for $80. Barely used. Its white and should go well with your bike. Has all padding in it too. Great for summer, very breathable. Let me know:)

Thanks for all the replies. Mavelick, I have a jacket actually. And boots. They are just not very booty. They are those Timberland boots with elastic sides and Rider Training Institute specifically said no elastic sides, so I was wondering about that.

Anyway, another question: how much on insurance will I actually save if I take the course? Is it just a few bucks or is it going to be significant?

No problem!

I've heard that it depends on your insurance company whether or not they will give a discount due to the course. Ask your current insurance company if they will lower your rate after taking the course.

What's your life worth? people that have ridden for years have learned stuff on the course when they didn't take it originally.

if you're concerned about your gear why not take pics of it and contact the school to ask them if it's acceptable. the bare minimum for most of them is a D.O.T. helmet, jean jacket, jeans, leather gloves (they don't even need to be motorcycle gloves, just be leather and cover your wrist), and leather boots that cover your ankle (most hiking or work boots will suffice, when I took my course a few years back i wore combat boots). having decent gear will protect you in the event of an unscheduled upset, which could happen at the fault of some one else.

My friend's kid had an upset and lost a shoe, could have easily broken his ankle.

For a helmet, it's actually $30 at Parker Bros. but they give you a $25 gift certificate to use if or when you buy a helmet from them. You can get a leather jacket from Value Village for around $20. You can use work gloves from Canadian Tire. They have the Mechanix gloves on sale for under $20 I believe and you will find it useful later on when working on your bike. As for boots, you can find a cheap pair of Timberlands or Lugz at Value Village as well for under $20. And you can just wear normal jeans.

The money you will save with a motorcycle safety course is $0. Last time I checked, no insurance company gives discounts for the course. You will save a lot of money after being licensed for one year from the start of your M1.

Good luck.

A: You need gear for the course... our insurance requires it, of the students and the teachers. What you chose on your own time is your choice though I will say. Gear is a very good idea. But we are all adults so we can make our own choices. I believe you should know your risks. Yes I ride coatless from time to time BUT I made myself look through the "Road rash queen"s website because I feel its my responsibilty to know the risks and fully understand them before making a choice.

B: Like Cruisingrrl I too have had students who have been riding longer than I've been alive, comment on how much they learnt. Some stuff will prob be a repeat but stick with it and it is at least a chance to hone your skills with teachers who can give you pointers and tips.
