motorcycle pants

hi all,

are the actual designated motorcycle pants suppposed to be worn on top of, let's say, your jeans? are they meant to be worn on top of something? or to be worn just as regular pants? (besides the fact that they have extra protection etc). or does this depend on the type/model of the motorcycle pants?

and also im wondering, what's the main purpose of wearing chaps? i know it's something u put on on top of your pants, but is this supposed to protect you when u go down? the legs are covered, but your butt? im thinking if you fall and slide, wont u be sliding on ur butt somehow?

thanks.

There's different kinds of pants and some are meant to be worn over regular pants and some by themselves.

Chaps, someone correct me if I'm wrong, are worn to protect against rocks, bugs, etc. which is why they just cover the area normally hit by such things.

I wear VNM under gear underneath my motorcycle gear. Makes putting it on and off easier, very comfortable and keeps you cool. Oh and it's compression gear so you don't feel as sore after a whole day of riding. I can't imagine wearing jeans under my pants, it would be so uncomfortable.

As has been noted, different types for different uses. Revit, Joe Rocket and Dainese all make commuter oriented "over" pants designed to be quickly removed. I have a pair of the Revit pants and they're quite comfortable over jeans, even in the summer given that they sport large ventilation panels. The Joe Rocket over pants are also well reviewed.

You'll find that any pants worn over jeans will not be anywhere near as comfortable as being worn without jeans underneath. Leather or textile I wear either nothing underneath or VnM or wool long johns and it is FAR more comfortable than when I've worn jeans underneath.

I wear my joe rocket pants over my jeans, but only with the inside liner taken out. If it was raining and I was just going for a scoot I would put the liner in and maybe wear long johns underneath the pants... though I haven't done that yet.

I find it comfortable, though in the summer it would get very hot.

cool. thanks for the replies.

i saw an article before regarding different material for motorcycle pants, and since the minimum suggested pants are 'thick' enough jeans, it was interesting to see the different tests that theyve done. ie: tear force, how long such material will last if dragged accross the pavement etc. jeans provided minimal preotection and were compared to others such as leather, ballistic material, other textile etc.

i'll post if i find that article again. just cant remember where i saw it.

its a well know article.

where do you guys get your VNM gear? im sick of wearing more snowboard oriented undergear, just to hot for me.

I have reinforced riding jeans that I wear over my normal jeans only because I don't want to wear them all day at work and changing pants is a pain. If I'm wearing them over normal pants I can just take them off at my desk instead of changing in the washroom.

My 2 piece leathers I couldn't squeeze pants under.

It depends on the design, purpose, and personal preference.

I usually wear pants when riding my motorcycle.

Usually??

What can I say, I'm a free spirit. Plus I figure that the package will act as an anchor if I lowside into a slide and slow me down quicker.

thoughts on pads, armors etc that you can strap on with regular clothes? or other gears? (ie: knee/elbow pads)

jackets with armor or just paddings? specially for leather jackets.

i guess everything pretty much boils down to personal preferrence. but it's nice to hear what others do/wear. thanks.

pads/armor is a good thing if you want to avoid a busted kneecap or elbow.

If using my reinforced riding jeans I wear strap on knee/shin guards as the jeans are too loose for the softer armor that came with them to stay in place enough for me to feel it would do anything. Unfortunately, however, the length of the shin guard combined with the height of my Sidi boots, makes it so wearing both is either close to impossible, or just uncomfortable.

its a well know article.

VnM Sportgear will be sold at Speedworx in Markham. It is a new high end race oriented shop that just opened up. Also, you can get customized branded Pro6 VnM Sportgear at Pro6 in Toronto or directly at the Calabogie race track.
This stuff will keep you about 1000 times cooler than snowboard layers will. It is designed to combat the complete opposite......extremely hot weather. :)
