Motorcycle or Car?

If you have to ask, you already know.

Get the car because when you get on the bike, you won't be in control of your life, and you'll be doing 60km/hour when cars are doing 30.

Based on personal experience, I would suggest waiting until you're at least 21 to get a bike. The only exception is if you live at home and have access to a car when you need it already, and are willing to burn the money on insurance. I got a bike when I turned 16. The first year, it cost me $2400 in insurance. The following year, my rate decreased to $1900, where it has stayed for the past four years. This is full coverage and $1m liability on a CBR 125. So for me to ride this little bike for the past four seasons (and now in the fifth season) has cost me $10,000. I've paid for the bike two-and-a-half times over just in insurance. Somehow I managed to do it while working part time, putting myself through two years of college and still graduating with honours, but it sure as hell wasn't easy, and now I wonder how on earth I did it. But that's besides the point.

Ok, this is what I've learned: Be patient, save money. Get your G first. Do you go to school? If you do, do you commute or live in an apartment? If it's the former, a car is better (school is from Sept-April, riding season is March-November. Do the math.) If it's the latter, then you probably don't need transportation and most likely won't have a place to put the bike anyway.

So, you want to get the bike? This is what you do: Get the M1 and do a safety course, thereby getting the M2. Wait one year (don't forget to put your change in the piggy bank, and never break a five.) Now you've been licensed for a year, and are 21 or 22 years old, so you get the preferred rate by insurance companies (or at least Jevco, which is probably who you'll end up with). Buy an older bike that is in decent shape and reliable, and forget about getting collision coverage.

Now you're set, and you won't be able to shove a hockey puck up your *** like I can, unfortunately.

Bikes are toys, cars I find are more for transportation. Get the car, and then start saving for a bike.

Smart advice.

I got my M2 at 23.. but waited 5 years to get my M. Didn't ride in between those years. Smartest thing I ever did!

Just curious, why was waiting 5 years without riding before you got your full M smart?

Take it from someone who rides, rain, shine or snow. If you score a scooter you can ride that ***** 24/7 365. Two things you'll need is a windshield, and excellent warm gear.

This is your ride...Yamaha BWS 125
I had the BWS 50 which was good for winter but not really fast enough for any 80km roads.
Don't believe me, look at this

It has big knobby tires for grip in the snow, hand guards to keep the cold wind off your hands. Throw a windsheild on that baby and you got a serious winter scooter. My next scooter will be the 125 for sure.

Are you expecting to pay more for insurance on that 125 relative to the 50cc you have now?

I bought my first bike at 17 (no car until I was 20) and never had any doubts. Looking back.. I wouldn't have done it any different.

Side note on the scooter video, after listening to the emergency dispatch radio, someone would call that in so fast, and you'd have a cop coming to kick you out for using a motorized vehicle on a park/school field.

Also get a car first.

Personally I think its stupid when people don't have cars, but they buy a motorcycle. I bike is a recreation vehicle in Canada, get a car for all yr round driving conditions.

The only time it semi makes sense is for those people who live in the downtown core and never leave their area. I say get a bike when you can afford it.
