Motorcycle GPS

Had my Garmin Zumo 660 for 3 years now and use it both in my car and on my motorcycle. The Zumo cradle connects to the battery to charge the GPS while riding. I have used the GPS to tour across the USA each year. I also have downloaded route maps from RoadRunner magazine which provided four very interesting/exciting routes in the Colorado Rockies. You can also plan your routes via Garmin Mapsource and Basecamp.

The Zumo is pricey but to my mind is worth it being waterproof and shockproof (you should see the scratches on my Zumo where I have dropped or banged it) it has lasted the 'use' test

Just a word on the 550, I don't know if Garmin's routing has changed, but the autorouting is abysmal, seriously. I can't tell you how many stupid roads its turned me onto, complete backroad, unpaved BS that Google Maps actually routes around. The Garmin tried to make me do a ~150 degree turn to go down a side road only to turn back onto the road I was already on 5 mins later.

I prefer having a dedicated GPS. I had a Zumo 550 on my old GS, sold that with the bike. The unit was good, but eventually the rubber buttons will come out, or tear away, and there is no cheap fix that Garmin offers, only to pay $250 for a refurb unit because they have no solution for a $1 piece of rubber.

I have a Zumo 660 now on my new GSA, and find it to be a better product. Wider screen, no real physical buttons to wreck save the power button on the top. Offline maps, plotting and expansion with a micro sd card make it a great device.

I do like the garmin software, basecamp. Having all of N. America loaded on my computer, plus the millions of POI's make plotting a real ease. Have not really looked at at the other options out there for mobile phones so cant comment how they stack up.

I've been using Garmin on my iphone, and it works really well. I like that you can plan routes (albeit only on the device) and recall them later.

only being able to plan routes on the device itself would be a real deal breaker for me.

It's better than nothing, like tomtom. I used it for quite a while, but you couldn't plan multi point routes. Garmin is fairly straightforward, I usually just plan something out in google maps, then program the turns in the garmin app.

Just an update, I went with the nuvi 550 with mounting kit and power cord.
Thanks everyone for the help!

On a side note, I was hoping someone could answer this question that isn't relevant to this thread. So I went to the license test centre today to write my G1, because I wrote my M1 and got my M2 before the G1.
So when I was about to write it the lady behind counter couldn't figure out why it was showing that I already had my G1. When the manager came over, he asked to see my license and on the back he showed me that in fact says "M2/G1" but on the front it just says "M2". Anyone know why? And, does the M2 in fact class as a "G1" (with set restrictions to according class)?

If I remember right, when you write your M1, it gives you your G1 at the same time since you have to write both tests.

Well yes, when you write the M1 you are writing the G1 test but I only payed for the M1 test. Now, this is where it gets a little grey because when I completed my M2 I payed....I think $120.00 fee just to hand in the papers at the test centre. ( I did the MSF course to get the M2)
Anyway, I guess I'll find out when I go for my G2 in March.

I use the a handheld Garmin GPSMAP 62s and a RAM mount. Best GPS I have ever owned (at the expense of a smaller screen). It's got a barometer, altimeter, track-log, and lots of other features standard GSP units lack.
