Motorcycle Camping Tents

Let us know how it goes. Tents are a personal thing. Some of the ones people have suggested I have destroyed in a week or two.

I'm hoping to get out a few times this yr, i'll be sure to give a review

la cordee also have a big sale on right now...

Thanks for the heads up on the sale, that was great to be able to save a few bucks on the same product

Thanks for that weblink, never heard of that site! I was in search for a tent aswell. I was looking at the Midori series aswell (Midori2) for the last few months, and saw one at the outdoor show a while back, light and great company, though wasn't a fan of all the mesh, on a hot day not much privacy, also didn't like the colors (just personal).

Got the Elixir 2 on sale, great price on that website

I like that the outer shell can be setup before the inner, helps on rainy days a lot and hard to find in a tent, so the inner tent doesn't get wet and you can stay dry setting it up. Also comes with a footprint at that price, never seen it that low. Got good privacy, and the white makes the inside feel bigger/brighter/cooler. Setting up the exterior separate also makes for a nice shade on the beach for day trips with a partner. Details like glow in the dark zippers are nice too

I got the Nemo sleeping pad with the order, another great deal on that website, matches the tent aswell lol. If you get a tent, some kind of pad will greatly help, if not from the hard ground, at least the cold being sucked outta you.

No need to use an external pump or mouth, and lifetime no hassle warranty from nemo.

Right now I have a Hennesy Hammock I've been using for about 5-6yrs, from moto camping to cycle touring. Its light and easy to setup. However, I hate it for many reasons. I got an under quilt to stay warm, however even on hot summer days and with a winter sleeping bag, its always sooo cold. There is no room inside for gear, so everything from helmets to next days clothes stay outside. Once in the hammock, getting into the sleeping bag is a mission, after a long days riding a bit of a pain. Once in, good luck going out to pee.

Also after my last little accident, my leg and arm was sore enough i couldn't move them up or down, barley rode home in 3 days. Luckily I got motels after, however there is no way I could have got into the hammock and slept in a sleeping bag in that condition, something a tent could afford.

Having to leave the helmet and basic moto gear outside in a garbage bag on rainy days killed the hammock for me, also I could never get a nights sleep without leg cramps and frozen feet.

My memory wanders back to a case in the 1980s when a guy's motorcycle fell over and crushed him in his sleep after the kickstand sunk into the ground.
I always use a 3x3 plate under the kickstand if I am off the bike for more than a few minutes or if I am off pavement. Never had a tip towards the stand with the plate(it does stand the bike up a bit so it is possible to blow over the other way if the kickstand isnt a little downhill from the wheels).

Nemo makes top notch stuff but you usually have to pay a premium for it. I dropped nearly $200 on that website, I’ve used them before they are good. Another one is latulippe as well, based in QC. I have a weakness for camping tech and gizmos. It’s worth it dropping a little extra and getting an insulated sleeping pad by the way.

This is one of the best things I’ve bought in a while, amazingly comfy...ignore the price tag, I got mine on sale for less than half that..very light and compact too.

Yeah, good point, not sure I'd want to be sleeping anywhere within falling distance of a MC....especially if you ride a rolling Winnebago like mine.

Lots of things that go bump in the night that could potentially hit your tent and knock over a bike inside. Wildlife.....drunk people from the campsite next door. (Been there, done that.....ugh)

those MSR tents are great, if I remember right there’s a lot of add one you can get too, did you see if they had an add on large gear vestibule too, I think they do? Also if they don’t come with a footprint I recommend one to protect the tent.nb I looked at these before I got my big Agnes one. The msr tents are very lightweight, well built and I think they have a good warranty too.

I want to take a motorcycle trip from Toronto all the way to my hometown of Houston,Texas in the summer. I always been interested in these pop-up tents but then I say to myself what if I have to sleep in a rough part of Tennessee what will keep me safe from loitering animals and dangerous humans? I'm not carrying a weapon. Or if I camp somewhere and my motorcycle is visible cops will wake me up in the middle of the night and harass me. Also on damp cold nights I might be susceptible on catching a cold?

That's why I use the brown and green tarps and put the bike inside. It doesnt stand out like a sore thumb if you pick your spot properly. Although, while sleeping on a pier in NS, I heard fisherman commenting and was going to get up and move until I realized that they were showing up for work 30 minutes after I quit for the day. They weren't upset, just confused. Waking up to a sunrise on the pier was awesome.

the fisherman in NS was probably going to wake you up and ask if you would give them a hand..

Looked into the insulated version, firstly it costs as much as the tent itself, which I find a little crazy, even on sale. Though, other than that sometimes these inulated pads have foil inside which make them crinkle in the night. Also I use a down North Face sleeping bag thats designed for fall/winter as my main sleeping bag year round, so hopefully will be okay, esp compared to the 1mm fabric between me and air I was use to on the Hammock.

Have bookmarked all these websites, thanks!

Yes, correct, they do have a vestibule add on, its on sale too, however I don't need it now or see myself needing that much space, it also takes extra space packing, an extra step setting up, and, adds 1kg to the setup. The Elixir 2 ordered comes with a footprint, to the OP, I would get one with the Midori 3 ordered, for the reason jc100 stated, protect the tent.

I think some MSR tents are lightweight, though looking at reviews of the ultra lightweight ones a lot of people complain about leaking, ripping, quaility etc... The Elixir 2 is just under 2.4kg with the footprint. I can live with that on the bike and prefer the 68d polyester for strenght/durability vs the 30-40d they use on lighter tents. The Hennessy Hammock in comparison, is just under 1.2kg and packs smaller than my sleeping bag.

Hammocks in theory are great. After a while I got tired of looking for sites with perfectly spaced/sized trees and pitching with the wind, the angle, tension, and height. Also, not sure if its because of the trees, spiders love this thing, maybe they think its a giant web for them at night, and I hate spiders.

How do you piss into an empty pop bottle in that thing?

With lots of skill and acrobatics, also need a wide mouth Naglene for accuracy. Some people get the version with side entry (mine is bottom entry) and that way they unzip the side, and stick their wee wee out at an angle for the waterworks. Anyone here can feel free to msg me and try the tent out if they want (to sleep in or feel for size, not test its washroom capabilities lol)

I keep a bottle in the tent for emergencies, however the only emergency I've had is with a giant spider. Not sure how it go in, thing was fist size massive, I wake up in the morning, enjoying the wind and sunshine, I notice a huge black spider on the mesh top near the exit. I was like all good, its on the outside, till I looked twice and almost got a heart attack. First wondering how to exit without touching it our it falling on me (impossible), secondly realizing it had been in the tent with me all night. I opened the Naglene bottle, said a prayer, and placed it near the spider, it fell in, i closed the bottle and ran outta the tent. I did let it go without harm, part of me wanted revenge however I'm sure he/she didn't want to be stuck in there with me as much as I did with them.

Not sure how it got in, maybe at night latched ontop my pants or something as I got in.

Must have been quite the standoff...

Bear spray is legal in most places. Specifically, BEAR spray. Not Mace. BEAR spray. You'd never use it in self defence from a human of course since it's very clearly marked for BEARS only. Who knows if it would even work on humans in an emergency self defence situation because it's BEAR spray, even though it's the exact same thing as Mace but sometimes just stronger. Because it's designed for ONLY bears, of course.

Also on damp cold nights I might be susceptible on catching a cold?

You don't catch a cold from dampness. You catch a cold from a virus. The worst thing you'll 'catch' sleeping in a tent on a cold damp night is some muscle aches the next morning and an extreme craving for a hot coffee when you wake up.

Gear yourself properly. Nothing worse than camping without the proper gear. It need not be a $500 tent when a $50 Walmart tent will give you pretty much the same level of shelter (albeit just less fancy, without doubt of less longevity, and not as easy to setup as a more expensive one, but for a one off trip, it'll get the job done) but a proper sleeping bag for the temperature ranges you expect to encounter, and a proper sleeping mat (to offer some softness from the ground, and more importantly, insulation from the ground) are essential.

i also ended up buying one of these off kijiji, 8lbs but shouldn't be a problem on my bike. i like the idea of having room to move around and if the wife wants to come with, should be comfortable for both
