Moto Camping refresher...

Depending on where you're going, a non-cellular based SOS solution is a wise option as well. Something like a SPOT, or the new iPhones have satellite emergency and location options. I've had a few opportunities to test the satellite features on my iPhone (for location updates, not emergencies, but it uses the same system) and it works amazingly well. I upgraded to this new phone last summer specifically to have the satellite options for our trip to James Bay, but that never happened...but it's still there for this year, fingers crossed.

We rode to the end of the Trans Taiga and back without phones or a support vehicle, but we were on KLRs so they would have just been redundant.

I was worried less about someone breaking down vs someone getting in a wreck for whatever reason and needing to get emergency services on alert ASAP vs someone needing to ride to the nearest other option.

With my iPhone, if there's no service and I dial 911 the satellite fallback system fires up automatically and we're in touch with someone in minutes, not potentially hours.

That assumes you are within arms reach of the bike. I assume the bike has gone on its own adventure. I need life support with me, not with my bike. Ime, top box is the first to explode in a crash. Life support spread over a few hundred feet is almost useless to me.
All I need is for one of my arms to be still attached and working, keep the emergency pain killers in my jacket pocket.

I have a tactical belt on my jacket that has a locking shot cord and a slide lock tornoquet.

That’s baller money, not MP money.

Shave 10k off that and let’s talk! 😂😂😂
Arn't you looking for a car with a 30-35K budget? Shave 10k off that number and you should still be able to afford decent wheels? I'm looking for a new (to me ) car and 20K is my upper limit.

I am…but I’m going to have a very difficult time justifying 10-15k for a motorcycle to my wife.

So the bike price will be the value I get for the Scrambler once / if I sell it.

Car will be similar. Equal trade value, or I can justify a few $ more if it’s an EV / hybrid by ‘saving’.

Meanwhile I'm all like "I sure hope my coffee lasts until the next fuel stop", I wonder if I can wire up a Keurig in my top box.

MP, get yourself a camping towel. Not quite as comfortable as a cotton bath towel, but who has room to pack that? The camp towels are fast drying, and pack small.

I pack 4 or 5 of the microfibre towels from Costco or Canadian Tire. I use most of them for keeping the bike reasonably decent, wiping off morning dew etc, but save 1 for drying off after a shower as well. It's pretty much soaked afterwards, but yeah, they dry out pretty fast as well if you strap it on the bike somewhere while you're underway, or drape it out in the sun when you're stopped for lunch or whatever.

You carry a lot more things than I do. I have one quick dry towel for everything (windshield, seat, bed, me). Even if it's soaking wet, a quick wring and it is ready to go again (although dampish).

My wife hates going on canoe trips with me (and would hate motorcycle trips if she came) as I don't want extra crap. Before a canoe trip, when she was at her bare minimum (or so she thought), I got her to cut half and then cut half of what was left. She still had stuff she didn't wear/use but at least I could carry the crap without collapsing. It's very rare that I have more than two of anything on a trip. She likes something different every day.

Not to derail the thread but I'm sort of thinking about and trying to price out a quick weekend get away to Iceland sometime in April/May. Just the wife and I.
Looking at cheapest flights, only a personal item is allowed within the cheapest price range. Can't fit much into that.

Not sure how this is going to fly with my wife as it will be more of a surprise trip. Mind you, I am the one that wants to see Iceland and not her.

4 microfibres rolls up into a footlong hotdog style roll in the end so it doesn't use a ton of space. Once I've used one of them to wipe down my exhaust or whatever after riding in some bad weather and trying to make the bike a little respectable again, I don't really want to use it for drying after a shower lol. Same goes for one covered in bug guts after cleaning my windshield.

But I do take a few frills motocamping, which is why I have a bike with lots of storage now.

I did exactly that for my trip to Vegas a few weeks ago because on Flair a personal item was free, but a regular sized carry on cost almost as much as I paid for the actual ticket lol.

6 days worth of clothing plus what little else I needed fit in there.

I think you can still arrange a free loaner sat phone from the QPP for JBR run.

Interesting, I'd never heard of this.

I did read last year however that there was some company planing to put towers along the full length of the JBR to allow for cellphone coverage. Probably in conjunction with them running fibreoptic up there or something I'd guess.

Edit: Found the link

Emergency Satellite Phone Loan Service (Trans Labrador Highway) – Official Site of the Town of Churchill Falls. Here’s the link for the Translab highway loaner, still looking for the JBR version.

Excited for you! I hope to take a longer camping trip as well this year.

Since my incident with leaks in the inflatable sleeping pads during my last trip, I'm reconsidering sleeping pad options but the inflatables pack up so small and are so comfortable.

I found this gas stove to be super compact. It's not the most stable and I have accidently knocked off my pot on a few occasions but it's small and works well. The fuel for this can also be used for the Thermacell Backpacker.

I do have a Firebox stove which I've used a few times but the gas stove is much more user friendly and you don't have to deal with all the soot.
