More trouble in snowmobile land

Love me a little Elan!!

Those sleds were amazing. The were so light it seemed impossible to get them stuck in even the deepest powder, and if you did, you just picked it up from the front or back and flung it around until you were unstuck lol.

My favorite was the 1972 Olympic 340 electric start. smooth ish twin , 24hp . Didnt steer on a plowed road, never fastest, bit cheesy suspension, but always started . Dad was pretty anal about hightest gas, filtered every tankup , new plugs every 15hrs in every machine , he called it cheap insurance .

Someones early season ride went poorly in Wasaga today.

Bad day yesterday, 60 more let go in Thief River at Arctic Cat.
Friends in high places with heavy online and industry press didn’t want more bad news for a struggling snowmobile industry.
Cat also closed the race team support yesterday.

It will be interesting to see if there is any part of the industry left. Obviously they are popular in some pockets (eg far north and mountains) but as a general consumer product it seems like the end is near. Less snow every year and price climbing every year is a rapid spiral. Sleds are fun but not $2K a day fun.

Polaris and Ski-Doo are still big in the game, but for how long and at what level ?

Is one trying to hold on to be the last and have a monopoly on sleds? As volume drops and emissions requirements increase, cost goes to the moon.

I was saddened when Redline bailed. I had hope they would guide the industry forward. Sadly, they flopped.

When Yamaha and Cat decided to combine resources it looked like a good deal for both parties. I wonder what will happen now that Yamaha has fewer powerplants to sell ?

Yamaha exited the market last year. Skidoo has over 80% of the market at this point I would think that Polaris will probably step out soon and it will be doo only
