More than 7,000 B.C. port workers now on strike

And now they're working again for 72 hours and then striking again. Todays strike was declared illegal.

The port workers voted and rejected the settlement. 19.2% raise over 4 years. Median wage for longshoreman would have gone up to 162k from 136. Holy crap, fire them all and start again.

I was also wondering wouldn't it be clogged with ice some parts of the year

Not any more.

And the new port in Tallahassee will likely be Work To Rule, so the rates will be much cheaper.

Man.... did I ever get into the wrong business.

Can they afford a house near work?

Let's face it, that may be the standard when you're the only game in town. The trouble is that at some cost point the employer spends the capital to move. Once that's done there's no going back.

How does any employer move an ocean port ? In Van you can’t go down , that’s America, cant go up , no highways . Can’t move backwards to the Island , since your still not on a place where trucking works later .

They can't relocate the port but I think there is lots of room to fire them all and hire a more competent workforce for substantially less money.

Easier said than done if I understand the rules. Something like the site being union.
I'd be more worried about HA than the union. If Vancouver Port Co closes and BC Port Co takes over the site and begins hiring, obviously the union (and HA) will have a huge push to get back in but they may not be there for the first little while.
