Modular / Flip Up Helmets

Can these modulars being mentioned be used while open? It seems to me with the front way up top they would have terrible aerodynamics compared to the two I mentioned which flip all the way around into a jet style.

I have ridden with mine open, but low speed traffic type stuff. Just to cool off. The wind does grab at them.

roughly at what speed does it become a bother ?

I've never actually watched the speedo...but I would take a guess at over 60kmh. Keep in mind it's the HJC that only flips up, and if it makes a difference, I'm on the Shadow, so seating is fairly upright.

ok thanks.

I missed a comma.
Read that my HJC only flips up, not only HJC's flip up.

i figured that what you wrote was an autocorrect error from your phone ...

BMW EVO6 made by Schuberth, only issue it is not DOT approved so technically it is not legal in the USA, but I always wear mine.

Top quality unit, very quiet and the visor is tinted to block the glare but light enough to see the Navigation and instruments.

Shark Evoline is designed to be ridden either open or closed. The chin bar goes right to the back of the helmet. Check out the Revzilla video to understand the concept.

That evoline is the one that the TPS are using, iirc.
Also worth mentioning is that a modular will have more wind noise than a FF, at least according to most users feedback with experience with both. I actually did not realize that wind noise can have such a negative effect on hearing. Until I get a different helmet, I plan to start using ear plugs or earphone buds.

I've been riding with ear plugs since I started riding. Wind noise is high enough to cause hearing damage in all 3 different models of helmet I own. All of them are FF.

I feel stupid for not knowing it was an issue.
And FF as well? Is this where we may see the difference between lower and higher priced lids?

Maybe. Mine are Shark RSX, Shark RSR2, and Scorpion EXO1000.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that people that drive with the window down also experience premature hearing loss in the left ear due to wind noise.

I'll bet that study wasn't from the UK ?
I always drive with the windows down. ?
Those helmets are mid price point, right? I'm gonna check out the Shark at the next show.

Price isn't always a factor when is comes to noise reduction. But generally cheap units don't have the R&D some of the spendy units get.

Some of the expensive FF helmets are due to great protection and lightness. And typically lIghter materials allow more noise to get through.

It just not clear cut on what money will buy.

Most noise comes from the neck opening on a helmet, and a modular can close tighter around the neck, making it quieter. My Schuberth C3 Pro is rated as one of the quietest helmets out there.

Roof's look the coolest.

The LS2 models they had the show seemed decent for the price and get good reviews but they are plastic shell and made in China. Still thinking about getting one as they are half the price of Roof and have a flip down sun visor.

About all I can add to this discussion.

I got one - I so wanted this helmet to work, but you get what you pay for... List of features is impressive, but build quality isn't the greatest... sun visor keeps getting stuck in half-position, locking chin-bar is a bit tricky - sometimes it feels like it's locked, but it isn't and sometimes it just doesn't lock esp when you're wearing it and want to flip it down... finish on it looks all out of alignment... Perhaps I'm nitpicking...

It looks like it could be amazing helmet if they only spent another 30 minutes on designing it :)

Still for convenience and the price, it's pretty good.

That's the LS2 you're referring to? Thanks for the review. I did notice at the show that they were a bit cheap feeling. Price is what had me leaning toward one. I can find them on eBay for under $120. The Roof helmets I was considering instead are over $500 and I can't find anywhere that stocks them to try one on. GP Bikes can't even special order them now. No sun visor either.
