Meng Wanzhou

can someone give coles notes on this whole thing please. I try to keep up with current events, but missed this somehow.

If I remem correctly, we kept the lady because she was a spy? what do those other guys have to do with it?

Trump tears up Iran nuclear treaty. Anyone doing business with Iran is now a bad person!

Huawei has a side business/shady thing going on doing business with Iran now. Now that’s not a good thing according to the orange skinned knobjockey.

JT is a sadomasochistic sub slut to the Americans and agrees to hold some head honcho Huawei exec here for extradition to the US for now being naughty.

The Chinese don’t like this so they put a couple of Canadians in the slammer with a not so subtle coincidental timeline and a not so subtle message to Canada.

Biden slaps Huawei’s wrist but let’s the exec off. Coincidentally…the Canadians in the Chinese slammer get released.

Something Ike that!

China's about face on sending our guys home literally hours after Meng's release sure makes their claims from the last few years that they were spies and all that other nonsense pretty laughable though.
I wondered if they would do some face saving delay but nope. It has been made very plain the the two Michaels were pawns.

We need extradition treaties but with a time limit for these complex issues. Have your crap together and we'll hold your alleged perpetrator for XX days.

pretty much yes….I’m sure they were chosen to have the right amount of pressure on Canada though.
You don’t know that. I’m sure a lot of the information is beyond the public knowledge.

Or better yet, How do you know that?

well…If I was a Chinese spook…which I’m not…and I needed to pick a couple of people to be pawns in a political game of “you do that to us, we’ll do that to you” I’d pick someone with similar exposure and someone who would remain in the news in Canada a bit more than a backpacker.

Chief stupid took the jet to Calgary for a photo op with the Michaels. If we eliminated the carbon emissions of him flying around for photo ops, we could probably eliminate the carbon tax and come out ahead.

The biggest takeaway from this crap show IMO was the list of her possessions upon arrest that the rcmp was kind enough to release.
The mobile devise that the CFO of huawei was sporting was a iphone 7.
Speaks volumes about the quality and security of huawei devises when their CFO knows better than to use their product.

I was entertained that the official US position is that the DPA with Meng and the release of the Michaels were completely unrelated events that just happened to occur at a similar time.

I heard the opposite, that it was actually a condition thereof.

Followed immediately after by the official statement distributed through Chinese state media that they were released for “medical reasons“. Had to literally LOL on that one while I was wrenching on the bike in the garage - how stupid do they think the rest of the world is?

Here's my source. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you can come up with a source that says the opposite. Politicians aren't interested in truth, just perception.

"When asked if the White House was involved in brokering a "prisoner swap," White House press secretary Jen Psaki rejected the premise.

The deferred prosecution agreement with Meng was "an action by the Department of Justice, which is an independent Department of Justice. This is a law enforcement matter," she said, adding, "There is no link.""

All the more reason to make sure we have huawei tech in our 5g network. The chinese are stand up people.

They dont think the rest of the world is stupid. Releasing the Michaels literally two minutes later and claiming it was for medical reasons was a massive troll and a big FU to the west. Hostage diplomacy.

so those 2 guys were just in the wrong place at the wrong time? could have been any canadian?

No.

They'd have picked ppl with enough influence to make an impact via whoever is available.

While I don't agree or like China, they've more balls than the West lol. Honestly don't mind them and the dumbasses South beating each other up....too bad we're America's ***** always get dragged in.

What's the west gonna do right? Tell the Chinese they have little *****? lol

There's literally nothing we can do and we've been enabling China for the last....before I was born, to get in this state. During the last 2-3 years we've also witnessed massive businesses bending over in the name of great President Xi Jinping /sarcasm. I've also noticed an increase in video games removing references to Hong Kong, and Taiwan (HMMMMMMM I WONDER WHY!) outside of the Chinese versions.

So yeah, they do it because they can.

Wrong. There's literally tons we CAN do. But our fearless leaders havn't the stones.

As a start, an individual person could take a moral stance and not buy anything marked as made in china. For complicated objects like cars, you are unlikely to get to zero percent but for everyday objects like pencils, paper, some electronics, etc you can make that choice (normally at a cost of less selection and more money).

I seriously doubt it. We're motivated by individualism and greed; China knows this and has made businesses bend over as a result.

This is hard as ****. I just flipped over my keyboard, mouse, DualShock 4, XBone controller and Switch Pro controller. Only the Switch Pro controller is made on Germany lol

You forgot the /s

s a start, an individual person could take a moral stance and not buy anything marked as made in china

People threaten to do that all the time, however their moral stand usually ends right around the time that they’re staring at a Chinese made product on the shelf versus a North American made equivalent product on the shelf, and one costs 20% more.

We all know how that ends 95% of the time.

The only thing that will change this for the entirety of the world outside China is for all major nations for whom china relies on for exports to *collectively* put the screws to them in some fashion that involves those exports. We could bring their economy to its knees inside 12 months, and Xi in short order afterwards.

But of course that would have negative effects for those other countries as well like us (but positive effects in the long run), so who knows if export based pressure will ever become a thing. When people can’t buy their favorite spatula for $.99 at Dollarama they probably be protesting in the streets. 🙄
