Media server

i would really suggest the Apple TV(2nd), jailbreak it yourself....Done.

I am waiting for that Airplay mirroring from Mac(July). I will make use of that feature A LOT, A LOT, A LOT.

Every home should have an Apple TV.

Or a jailbroken iOS device can be used just like an Apple TV.

Done, now you're suck with only 720p.....

Based on your requirements/wish list - I also recommend WDLiveTV. And if you don't have a network jack where the WDTV resides, you can either purchase a USB WiFi stick or use a PowerLine network ( such as WD's Livewire http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=310 ).

I use a WDLivePlus box in the bedroom with a Livewire network connection and have zero complaints streaming HD video from my NAS or watching Netflix.

is 720p bad?

i watch sports in 720p, and have no issues with it....because its only 720p!!!!!

If AppleTV 3(1080p) gets a jailbreak today, i buy it today, Done!!

A lot of people will mention other products that is not Apple....because they don't have other Apple products!!!

But i will say this, those other products, do a lot, and work really good, but i prefer compatibility to work with each other, anyday!!
With firmware updates to things like Xbox and Playstation, also add most of these features.

Even my Sony XBR TV, allows streaming from USB and networked sources.

yes 720p is bad when your video is 1080p and your TV is 1080p....

If Apple is so great why do you need to jailbreak it?

Did you know who you were addressing with that question? Now you've opened up a shitstorm of links to Apple promotional material :eek:p

My first and last experience with Apple:

I have been using portable mp3 players since the late 90's... I remember the CDR players that could read mp3s burned to CD, and I used several varieties of flash media mp3 players.

A couple years ago I won an ipod nano, so instead of selling it I tried using it.

What do you mean I can't drag and drop my folder structured mp3's to this device?

What do you mean I have to use this kife iTunes software to manage playlists and copy files to my device?

It seriously could not have been a more frustrating experience - Apple tries to dumb-down everything, and unless you conform completely to THEIR way of doing things you cannot use their products.

People told me I would eventually get used to the way iTunes and ipods work, and even if I rip/download my own content I will eventually appreciate and "like" their way of listening to music on the go.

After two years of trying to get used to the ipod nano, I can still honestly say I would NEVER choose an Apple product for music ever again!!! I can only assume the same holds true to their networking and media devices :P

I run a WD Live with the 1TB HD and it works great EXCEPT that it needs an ethernet connection, which isn't available by my TV. That makes copying movies a little cumbersome. I also run a DNS-323 for storage for the network and I love it.

Ideally, I'd use a DNS-323 or (if you're starting new) DNS-343 for storage and Boxee to play on the TV. The Boxee can also stream to your TV from online locations. The only reason I'm not upgrading is because of a lack of LAN throughout the house AND because the WD Live has a 1TB HD where-as the DNS-323 has 2 x 500gb HDs.

The biggest criteria I suggest is that from now on, every component in your system has Gigabit LAN.

You don't really need gigabit for streaming. It's more important that your NAS can do gigabit (which the 323 can't due to a weaksauce CPU).

I have a boxee box.. no real issue to be honest, just hating that they are a bit slow to release software updates.

I tested a few of the compact cpus with hdmi output that tiger direct sells, problem was mostly getting a stable OS that could run the media server. I eventually went back to basics (specially since I did not want to have a mouse n keyboard all the time).

Setup:
1) External hard-drive added to router
2) Network share from main PC
3) Boxee box

I was looking to run an apple TV for netflix, but have found that boxee runs netflix great. It is a bit harder to find apps for it, but still good enough. Also the fact that I did not need to keep updating jailbroken stuff or anything like that was a +. Eventually you realize that keeping updated with new hacks and cracks is more work than enjoyment.

Would I look for another one? possibly. At this point I am hoping to look into the new Boxee live TV.

I have a dns-323 as well and started with xbmc. Had it. On Net xbox for close to 10 years but hd content was an issue so I got a boxee box. It's garbage. Nothing but glitches and needing restarts. Anyone that hasn't tried a working media center might find it acceptable but the fact they forked it from xbmc which was stable as heck just makes it all the. More frustrating. Anytime they update the firmware it fixes 1 bug and Introduces 30. One Of the worst purchases I've ever made.

bummer that you are seeing so many glitches, I havent seen a lot. I get a random no sound or frozen box but is very rare when it happens, then again I never shut the thing down n mostly just watch movies or netflix

720p is awesome, just watched the NBA Finals in 720p, and i was happy with the quality.

Streaming a 720p video can sometimes buffer, can't imagine 1080p(i don't bother).

Apple is Great!!!! They Care!!!

Its up to you if you wanna be vulnerable and choose to do so! <----hope you catch on.
